Sorry if this has been brought up before. It probably has, but what are your opinions on the "Ash Tray" bridge cover Vs. No bridge cover. I just got one for my 60th anniv. tele. 8)

It's great for holding my cigarette butts, but little else.

If you palm mute frequently, ditch it, or start smoking if you don't already.

Leo had it right and covered all the bases when he created the Tele. A Telecaster served smokers well. It held onto your lit cigarettes just above the nut and let you flick the ashes into the ashtray that came with the Teles. The only thing it didn't do was open the old style cans of beer.

I'm satisfied to have had the opportunities to replace the pickups. bridge, and buying the "ashtray" allows this 2009 Standard to both stand out and sound as if we were back in 1973...

I have a Tele that I've owned since 1970. It has a Fender Bigsby on it, so it came with that small bridge cover. I never use it, because like others have said I palm mute all the time. It just gets in the way. Besides, it does fall off a lot. I think the only reason I still have it is because I don't use it.

The ash tray thing hinders my playing style. The no cover bridge is now my favorite bridge to play.

I wish Fender still included them with their guitars even though the new style Tele bridges can't accommodate the things. As any good smoker will know, nothing is cooler than using a Tele ashtray for, well, an ashtray.

They look kind of cool but that 's about it. If you like to palm mute a lot it's going to get in the way.

Premising it doesn't get in your way, it is a good thing to leave it on as it provides extra shielding for the bridge pickup.

But where will you put your cigarette butts? I don't know if having it on actually makes any difference in sound; it might reduce noise a bit, but I've never seen anyone play a Tele with the ashtray on. You'd think that if the additional shielding was needed, people would use them.
