:?: I just purchased a MIM 2004 Telecaster. The tele is black with white pickguard, chrome knobs and standard maple neck. On the back of the headstock it has a sticker that says "Special Edition". My question is does anybody know what may have been unique on this particular model and year that warrants the sticker? Thanks in advance for the help.

Could you post a pic of the guitar? Thanks

Took me a while to figure out how to do it. Sorry for the blur here but as you can see, looks pretty standard.

Hard to tell from picture but the color actually has a metal fleck, especially in the light, definitely not plain black.

This sticker is the only reason I have asked the question. As it is my first tele, it certainly left a good impression. I am totally happy with the sound and the finishing.

Wow. Very nice. Let me do some research.

The guitar gives hints, but I can't put it all together. A fairly easy way to identify is to take your serial number and put it in:

www.guitardaterproject.org

This gives you some information about your guitar that could narrow it down. From the looks of it, I think it's Mexican. Good luck.

The serial number didn't show in the picture but it is definitely mexican made in 2004 according to Fender websiter. Unfortunately Fender only details the date but none of the details. I'm just curious if it has different pick-ups or controls or is it just a sticker.

Well, there has to be something different about it other than the sticker. It wouldn't be "special" if there wasn't.

I just bought the same guitar on Craigslist $227.
It's a nice guitar, after I set it up and adjusted the pups.
Straight grain maple neck, nicely finished, frets are dressed well,
truss rod works as expected.
The hardware is the same as the current Standard Tele.
The black sparkle is really subtle. Cool.
I'd like to know what the pickups are,
I assume they are the Mex standard too.
It's a bit noisy, I'm gonna shield it and
put new pups in.

Don't know what makes them "Special Edition"

I just finished modding a MIM Strat, and I can't put it down.

No more $2000 guitars for me.

Looks like a regular MIM Standard Telecaster, except for the color.

It's probably a FSR (Fender Special Run, or Factory Special Run) made for a dealer. Sometimes a dealer will order 250 or 500 or whatever number of guitars in a different color. Musician's Friend and Guitar Center do this all the time.

Probably it's just that - the color

I played the Tele through a bunch of amps last week
and it sounded good on all of them (except for the noise).
I got a new pickguard, shielded it (no shielding on the orig),
and shielded the cavities with 2" copper tape.
Put back together, it's whisper quiet.
Looks quite sexy, and it's pure Tele.
