The black tele with the maple neck is actually David Knopfler's Tele and is a '69 Thinline tele..

And the Red one with RW fretboard is a 1984-5 Shecter Telecaster.....

You can get wicked clean tones with a Tele while retaining some of that oh-so-delicious "twang." I play mine through a Pro Junior and set the volume at about 5, the tone to taste.

I get it all the time on a 2008 AmStd using an SCXD or my older Super 210. I also get a very nice clean tone with my 72 Reissue and 69 reissue Thinlines.

The only one of my Teles that tends to remain a bit muddy no matter what the settings is the Hwy 1 I got in 2002.

Yes u Can. Don't neglect your amp tone, dial it in and look for quality, not quantity. It's better to have one expensive great sounding guitar, rather than a bunch of cheap ones that sound poor. Also-don't neglect upgrading parts or potting the pickups if needed. To learn more here's a tip: Read the Guitar Players Guide to Guitar Repair book & DVD. It's loaded with tips and tricks. You might find it at the Public Library. If yu live in the Los Angeles area you can also consult with Andy Brauer. He is a tone champion. See some videos here: http://www.andybrauer.com

Ah Yes. I get it. Tone is a personal thing after all is said and done. Right you are. Did you know Apple has amp modeling in Garageband '09... but nothing beats the real thing with tubes that are warm. I had a Marshall Valvestate 80 that was sweet. I intend to get another small (tube) Marshall again. It has warm tone I always enjoy. And the Fender Champ or Blues amps are fantastic sounding. I wish Fender would install a contour knob on their practise amps!
