What are the benefits of this telecaster as compared to others?

All depends what you mean by "benefits".

Compared to your average Tele, it has a soapbar pickup at the neck, curved top body, pickup switch in the "Les Paul" location and a few trim differences. Whether or not any of these features are advantages is really up to the player.

My friend has the Aerodyne jazz bass, and if that's any indication, it ought to be quite nice.

The aerodyne Tele has always appealed to me, it's a great looking guitar. I've never heard one though, might have a look in youtube later.

I've never seen one for sale at any of the guitar stores I visit, I wouldn't mind finding one someday.

Not sure but I think the standard aerodyne tele has been discontinued. Am I correct? At least that's what it says on the musiciansfriend site.

I have been looking for an aerodyne tele for years! I have seen a few on ebay that were pretty beat up and probably not worth the money. The model is so well loved by the few who do own them that they are never going to be let go, me thinks.
