Don't worry, not a debate starter! Also sorry if it's an 'asked before', but I haven't been able to find it myself...

I'm just wondering where the following 2 tele's are manufactured:
-Classic Series '72 Telecaster Custom,
http://www.fender.com/products//search. ... 0137502306

-Classic Series '72 Deluxe,
http://www.fender.com/products//search. ... 0137702306

I'm new to tele's but am toying with the idea of getting one and quite like the look of these two, or is the American Standard a better bet?

sigh, so many guitars, so little cash:(

These guitars, like the rest of the Classic Series are assembled in Ensenada, Mexico from all American parts.

I play the 72 Custom and she just wails, also it is very different from the American Standard. Depends if you want the humbucker or go single coil at the neck plus there are many different features, ash tray bridge, 3 saddles, bullet truss rod, neck tilt system etc.

Do not underestimate MIM when it comes to the Classic Series..... they are amazing guitars for their price!

I do not believe that they are assembled from "all American parts".

I think you will find that they have a high percentage of MIM parts, most importantly the body AND the neck.

This does not mean they are second rate - just not MIA parts.

I meant the pick ups and bridge etc but yeah the wood is all MIM.
Also I shouldve said, my RI is an 02 I think which seems to have a nicer, smoother, more tinted neck than any recent example I've seen.

They are made in Mexico , with vintage American parts. They still work and you will sound good. After all it's a ClassicPlayer.

The MIA will have the newest tuners, pickups, and binding and every upgrade ever made on a TELE!

It's quality control, Fender style. The wood for the bodies and necks are inspected in Corona, CA. The frets, vintage tuners, pickguards, pickups, etc. are selected prior to assembly, but are assembled in Ensenada. The finishing is also done here in Mexico. The pickups could be made in Mexico, too.

I see on the specs for the '72 Telecaster Custom The neck is described as a C shape, but in the features section it says U-shaped neck. I like the traditional Tele headstock as compared to the '70s styled Strat headstock on the '72 Deluxe Telecaster.

Without reading the above comments, I'm gonna say go with MIA if you can afford it, and save if you can't :D

It's the humbucking pickup that's attracting me to the custom and the deluxe. If these models had a MIA counterpart it would be a no brainer, but as it is, I think I'l have to track some down and really try them out!

Exactly. It's the humbuckers that got my attention, too. I tried the '72 Deluxe, Custom and Thinline and ended up taking a Thinline home. I loved the thicker, mellower tone, the light body and the fretboard was just right.

I own 2 MIA Teles ('07 Highway One and '08 American Standard) and 3 MIM Teles ('08 1972 Thinline Reissue, '07 Baja and an '05 Standard upgraded with SCN pickups). The MIMs hold their own quite nicely indeed and they have features and pickup combinations that aren't available in a MIA.
