What tuning do you use when y'all play with a slide? I hate to ask such a stupid question, but my fingers are too small to make barre chords when I use the slide. Also when I play with a slide I put it on top of the frets, because it sounds better. Is this the proper place for it or is it bad form? I don't want to get any bad habit. Thank you.

Open G: DGDGBD
Open D: DADF#AD You can easily turn Open D into E by capo-ing the 2nd fret.

Hi robot, listen to "Brown sugar" by the Rolling Stones, Keith Richard uses open G a lot. 8)

Standard. When I learned, the thought of another tuning never even entered my mind. Much later, when I realized that people did use different tunings, I tried a couple but I couldn't get used to them. (Old habits are the hardest to break.)

For those who care, Keith Richards' is the prime exemplar of open tuning in rock music. He uses an array of Telecasters loaded with Gibson PAFs in the neck position. Moreover, at least two of his main guitars -- a blonde called Micawber and a sunburst one of similar (old!) vintage -- are modified to have only five strings. This is done because, when playing in open G, the root note of the chord is on the 5th string; if the 6th string is allowed to ring, it can drown out the rest of the chords.

Brown Sugar, Honky Tonk Women, Tumblin' Dice, Hand of Fate, Jumpin Jack Flash (live), Start me Up and countless more are all built around one chance in particular: (from low to high) 5-5-5-5-5 to 5-7-5-6-5. It essentially makes a unique sounding 5th and, because the so many strings remain open over the whole lick, it adds a ringing, almost 12-stringish, sound.

That shape, by the way, can be moved all over. Try it on 12 for Brown Sugar.

Wow, thank you so much for the help. I'm looking for some Rolling Stones records now, but my dad has alot more Beattles kinda stuff. I heard him mumble something about Joni Mitchell used some tuning with a slide, but I'm trying to learn without his help. Does anybody know what she used. I don't like the hippy stuff too much, but her songs sound easy to learn.

Joni Mitchell who, strangely, is from my hometown, has used something like 54 different tunings. She apparently prefers open tunings because her hands are weak. Lots of her songs are easy, but retuning is a gargantuan pain.
