Hi all, I've got something of a technical question. Is it possible to take a MIM tele ('04, if that matters) and replace the neck with an old Stratocaster neck? This part curiosity and part a result of the fact that I think it would look wicked cool and different....Any advice would be appreciated.

There should not be any problem to do this. But you can`t switch the other way because of the square heel on the Tele neck.

So it won't require any modification of the Tele body? Also, I imagine that I'll have to shim it up a fair bit -- the neck I want is definitely thinner than the "C" shape neck that's on there.

Hold on there! The neck might be thinner but the part that gets bolted to the body should be pretty much the same among necks.

If it were me, if the OEM neck came shimmed, I'd use only that shim with the new neck for starters. If the OEM neck was not shimmed at all, I'd simply bolt the new neck on without the shim for starters.

In either case, the new neck would have to be attached before you really could to determine the appropriateness of more/less/no shimming.

That's more or less what I was planning to do -- if I can find a strat neck, that is. I'd unbolt my tele neck, load the strat neck in there and tighten it up. The I'd restring it and see what came up; from there I would add shims. I think it would look wicked cool though...

Take it from first hand experience, it really does!

If you are looking for a strat neck you could just visit www.warmoth.com and get a new one at your specs. They make licensed Fender necks that will fit your tele like a glove
