Hey all, here's a question for you experienced tele players: what, in your opinion, is the ultimate telecaster amp? I recently played mine through a '65 Super Reverb Reissue (the one with 4 10s--maybe I got the name wrong) but it sounded DEADLY. Discuss.

The best i ever heard was my 59 watkins clubman. Now granted there may be better i just havent heard em. Strats and LP's sound crap through it but the tele kills em stone dead. That tele just doesnt sound as good through any of my other amps. Quite a feat out of a 6watt amp with a tone and volume control.

Glad your enjoying your super Rev. Great tele tone is the ultimate.

Haha, I wish I have a Super Reverb! It belongs to a friend of mine -- whose parents bought it for him! I just got a new Pro Junior which I've had lots of luck using for a great Tele sound. I just think it's hard to beat the '65...

I also play my Tele through a Pro jr. It has great cleans for early rock-n-roll & country sounds. I love this combination.

I don't own one, but I've played a Tele through a '65 Deluxe Reverb and that sounded outstanding. That is such a great amp.

I'm biased. I think a Tele sounds good through almost ANY decent amplifier...

Recently my favourite is the Egnator Rebel 20 though. :D

That's not untrue. I have Peavey Bandit 65 that I have gigged with for a couple of years now (insert mockery) but my Tele sounded wonderful through it, more so than any other SS amp I've played. Even an old Marshall Valvestate 65 made it sound good, and that's an amp I've never really enjoyed playing -- bought it on a whim, like, 5 years ago in my SS days.

People may sneer at bandits and valvestates but they should remember. Those amps come from 2 of the 3 biggest amp makers in the world. Their input into the design of amplification over the years is nothing short of astounding. The bandit was the must have amp when i was a kid in the mid 80's. I gigged a valvestate for years too, very robust.
Pro jr's are great amps infact i think the best amps have the least knobs. Especially when your putting something like a tele through it and going after a pure guitar sound. Who wants gimmickery and trickery when you can have that bridge tone.

Indeed. Bandits in particular have a special place in my heart. I never fell in love with the Valvestate, though I agree with your point.

I also believe that the "best" amp is simple. The PJ is nice because all you have to do is plug your guitar in, turn it on, turn it up and play. Teles seem somehow suited to that sort of use. For whatever reason it dislikes my Les Paul though -- which is OK because I'm going to sell it and buy a Gretsch or something like that.

My Les Paul sounds a little strange through my Pro Jr. too. I wouldn't say that it sounds 'bad', just different. Not quite as natural sounding as my Tele. However, when I add a distortion pedal inbetween the LP and PJ, it sounds great. A nice classic rock sound at high volumes.

Have you tried a distortion or OD pedal with the Lester & PJ?

Yeah, I have. I'm not really a big pedal fan, but I keep a Boss Super Overdrive kicking around for rock'n'roll jams. I used to use it a lot with my Peavey, but it hasn't seen a lot of use lately. One benefit is that it seems to tighten up the sound of my Lester through the PJ. I tend to be pretty conservative with the drive knob, and simply use the volume to "bump" the amp. I do find, however, that the PJ tends to sound better with trebly pickups. Not surprisingly, the neck pickup in my LP does not sound as good as the bridge pup with the volume over half. On the other hand, the main reason I bought my PJ, besides tube tone of course, was portability. I was getting real sick of lugging a big amp and pedals to gigs. Now I'll just take my Tele, my PJ, and maybe a wah (because it's too much fun to ignore!)

I have a 1967 Telecaster. When I was in a band, my amp was a 1964-6 (not sure what year) Fender Vibrolux reverb. It was a 35watt amp with twin 10" speakers. The sound was fantastic.....wish I still had that amp. I have a new Fender Twin combo. The sound is also fantastic. I'm in to the clean tones (probably due to my age). bill

I am always partial to a tube amp. I have a Blues Deville 410 and it has a lot of head room both clean and distorted and can blow the roof off the house or any small gig venue. I also own a Hod Rod Deluxe and it is just a great amp. I think choosing an amp is very personal and also depends on what style of music you play. Steve Winwood plays through a Cyber Twin SE, Clapton through a 57 Twin that has been modified to his particular specs. Two Blues players on the same tour using two different amps. Take the amp tour and play your Tele through a bunch of different amps and find the one you like the best. Plus you get a cool T-shirt!
