Combination of some very subtle changes that allow that guitar to make so many unique tones...

Wear on the finish. They playing feel of the neck may improve with age as it wears. A solid body tone won't change like an acoustic guitar. We had a good bit of post over on the Strat page on this subject.

The tonal qualities of the wood will change over time. It's all to do with resin crystallizing in the wood and drying out which cant really be done artificially. A nitro-cellulose lacquer ages better than the more widely used modern polyester based lacquers because it allows the wood to breathe.

My brother plays a 1970's Les Paul which sounds beautiful because it has aged well. I also have a violin from the 1930's with a wonderful tone even though it isn't valuable. So, yeah the sound of a guitar should improve over time becoming more resonant and having a richer sound.

I'm now just waiting for my guitars to age....... :)

I have a Tele that's about 38 years old now, and I don't think that the tone has changed as much as the way I play has. If you give some one like Eric Clapton a brand new guitar I'm sure that he still sounds like Clapton. And as ya know, that doesn't happen over night.

What does change is that you are the most comfortable playing your old guitar. You have worn it out to suit you.

Just my theory though. I could be wrong.

I've read on this site that the pickup magnets may weaken and may alter the tone. Is this true? If so, how long will that take? 20 or 30 years?
