Hey guys, been doing some looking onlline with no success...

2 questions..

When did Fender begin making Standard Telecasters in Mexico? If they began in 90 was it a full production year? I've been told that they didn't start doing tele's out of their mexican plant until 91.

and

What years did they use a top mounted bridge instead of the strings through body variation of the tele? I've seen early 90's versions done either way.

Anyone?

I remember seeing them first around 1985.

1998 was the first year for MIM Standard Telecasters with the current 6-saddle string-through-body bridge.

I'm sure of that because I had been collecting and reading Fender Frontline catalogs for a few years then and was also traveling three states as a salesman and stopping into every guitar store I could find to look around between appointments.

I had been wanting my first Telecaster for a while and the MIM Standards fit both my budget and my needs (I was a gigging bass player on weekends and didn't need a top-of-the-line electric guitar just to mess with at home).

Somehow the top loader MIM Standard Teles didn't seem like a "real" Telecaster to me (I've since learned otherwise) and I bought the first string-through-body MIM Standard Tele I ever saw in 1998.

Sorry for the long post but that's how I'm sure of the year.

On a related note, the serial number was MN6, which would indicate Mexico Ninety Six. But I bought it brand new in '98 and I'm SURE they were new then as a regular guitar store "window shopper" and Fender Frontline reader/collector. Come to think of it, I'm still both. :D

According to this book:

One one the best sources on Tele info, Tele Standard production began in Mexico in 1991, though the facility there opened a few years prior to 1991.

Don't know if they were standard telecasters, but I'm certain I remember seeing Mexican made telecasters in music stores in the mid 80's. Am I losing my mind?

This should clear up any confusion about Mexician Fenders.
