I'm upgrading the pups in my MIM tele to Texas specials. I was thinking of upgrading the pots and 3 way, too. I have 2 harnesses, a stock MIM and a 52 reissue. Here's what I have:

1. stock MIM tele wiring- 2 250K pots with the stock (metal and board) 3 way. It has a 100v ?resistor? wired.

2. 52 reissue. 250k pots are SIGNIFACANTLY smaller than the mim. Plastic 3 way switch. Smaller guage wire than the mim. Pots are wired w/ ?resistor? between them, and a smaller ?resistor? "jumpered" on the volume pot.

Here's my questions:
1. Which harness do you, the Fender community, feel would be better?
2. Do the smaller pots make a difference?
3. What is the difference between the 2 wiring setups?

Thanks in advance!
Mike

Below is listed for a Tele Std. Mexican. If you could hear mine now, you'd swear it was an American...

Ther are some general concepts that could be used.

Wiring set up: The one with the fewest 'jumps' will produce the 'cleanest' sound. The fewer conections the better...and clean is good. The one which grounds out each pot with a capactor to the volume SEPERATE from the 'jumped' condensor for both tone and volume, will produce a wider range of use and less humm. Conected it 'lessens' the value of the condensor. So, you can change your 'toneal' qualities with whatever capactor you chose for your style of play and it won't be affected by 'draw' from the volume pot.

1. Wires: Use comercial grade insulated wires. I used ones for a comerical Dryer. The insulation value and transmission qualilty of solid copper strand is a vast improvement and adds clarity. If you go to a higher id wire the tone will be 'richer/deeper'.

2. Ground. I went to a higher ID like 3xs for the ground to plug insert. And a heavier one for the tone grounds. One up on the volume and switch's.

3. Capacitors. Using one for the volume helps greatly. I prefer no load as it almost tripled the sound on mine. I used an orange drop for the tone and the std. CTS tele capactor which comes with the CTS pot for the volume. I did not juncture them to each other but kept the pots seperate on the third post...as with an American Std. per Seymoure Duncan. Every capacitor sounds different. Higher #, greater tone. Get ceramics

4. Pots. I'm a CTS believer. Gibson use's them for a reason. 250 give's a 'smoother sound', 500's for a BIGGER PUNCH AND POP...like country twang. If you want 'big texas' punch...the 500's may suite you better.
just changing the pots will make a vast difference. I prefer no load pots for volume as it almost tripled the sound and gave me more versitility. I literally had to turn my amp down over 1/2 on the volume using just a 250 no load over the Mexican.

5. Get a damn good soldierig iron with a 'third hand' if your doing it yourself and put something under your work. Protect your finish and make sure you get the damn 'lose' metal, etc out of your work when done. Presure blow it clean....

6. Shielding. I believe in 'dipping' or covering my work when done with latex or poly. But make sure it's right first. It helps greatly with feedback and humm.....

Good luck. If you can afford it, I'd take it to a Luthier. It's more agravating then you may think if you've never done it before. But hey, Fender is the Leggo of Ax's. You can get any sound out of it you want.
