I just bought a used Tele 72 RI. She's a real beauty with a really nice voice. I have a couple of questions.

1) I noticed that the HB pickups are tilted as expected a tad more air space at the bass side. It seems as though the screw pole pieces are out of alignment with the holes on the pup cover at the treble side. Is this normal or is something improperly adjusted?

2) I ran the Tele through my Marshall DSL401 and a Fender Cyber Deluxe and it sounded great on all pickup settings. I noticed that a number of people had posted at Harmony Central (reviews) that you MUST change the volume pot for the bass pickup to a 500k ohm. Evidently ths is supposed to address a muffled bass pickup sound? Mine sounded tight and just right and I know that it has not been changed out.

I take it you have the Deluxe with the 2 Hum's?

I play the Custom with one at the neck and am thinking of changing to the 500k pot. I've asked a few questions bout it on this forum but to vague replies.

I did hear that it brightens up well though......funny enough it did sound fine out of Marshall gear whereas it's very dark and Muddy through my DeVille, even the clean.
Your particular one may be a later RI than mine and problems may have been addressed.

As for the pole piece alignment, mine is fine plus I don't have that tilt anymore as I straightened it and just adjusted the screws accordingly.

Hope I've been some help at least.

Thanks for the info Celtic - I have an 06 72 Tele RI with 2 HB.

The pickup situation has me stumped though. I should think that if you move the angle of the pickup, the pole pieces and innards and cover would all move together. I'll just have to pull it apart next time it change the strings.

I also noticed some posts where owners were complaining about a cheap toggle switch. Mine looks like a quality switch, perhaps a switchcraft (?), definitely not cheap. I think I may have discovered the cause of this complaint as I was changing my strings. If you place the guitar on it's face, a large force is placed on the switch. I suppose it would only take a few shots to the tip of this switch to mess it up.

There are two '72 RI tele's with 2 HBs, the Deluxe and the Thinline.

Which one do you have?

I have the Deluxe. I think I've got it sorted. The pickups more perfectly with the four (!) adjustment screws. I just tried moving the individual height adjustment pole pieces and they are locked solid... that doesn't seem right. I would have to force them to get them to turn. Does that sound right to you?

Hmm..if I remember correctly, I think I'm able to adjust my pole screws just fine. I have a 72 RI thinline, but the pups are the same. trying to find some info online, but the wide range pickups are not very common.

I have the '72 thinline, and my pole screws adjust. In fact they've been adjusted in the past.
