They first came out with a Japanese Fender model in '86 or '87. It was essentially identical to Harrison's, except that Harrison's did not have a glossy finish and this one does. Anyway, I bought one partly because the grain was simply outstanding. It is rather heavy and the pickups are some version of a '60s Tele pickup. The guitar sounded quite brittle. That much rosewood does lend a distinctive tone to a guitar. I changed out the pickups for a Nocaster set to tame the treble. Also, this came with the six-piece steel barrel bridge (which I hate) that also wrecks the tone. That had to go too.

Since then they've offered one or two veneer models, which are really not the real thing. They also have a rosewood body Tele out this year, but it has a maple neck with rosewood board. Several independent builders are making "real" rosewood Teles. They run about $2k and are quite nice. I picked up one last year. That might be your best best if you want the real thing. and a top-notch gorgeous one at that.

Hi Cookieman:I'm a card carrying Beatles freak too.I don't know if you are intent on getting a Fender only Rosewood Tele but Burney,Evans,Tokai and several other top shelf Japanese makers have dead-on copies of the Rosewood. This site carries them as well as MIJ Fenders http://www.guitarsjapan.com /their prices are quite fair and you may very well get a MIJ Fender there cheaper than in the U.S. BTW I love your guitars.I've started to build up a collection of Beatles guitars-I wish my wallet would gain a bit of weight so I could really get on with it.

since this post originated in 09 I've acquired more Beatles related guitars.
my Ric 330 and 360 12
