I have a 52 tele American Vintage Reissue. Does anyone else who have one of these feel that the tone is pretty warm and bassy and not as bright and trebly as other fenders. I wonder why this is. Is there a way to make the pickups hotter, or has anyone ever swapped the stock pickups for other single coils?? or is this sacriligous lol. If you have can you tell me which pickups are the best to swap with.

I have the very same guitar.
The '52 is wired the old tele way.
If you want to modernize it, get it changed to the modern system.
I have not done mine yet, I know that you will have tone control on the neck pick up, and a combi of neck and bridge in the mid position with the modern system.
I an interested in getting mine done, however, I have posted the topic several times here and no one has really described the sound difference between the two to me yet.

Good luck

I'm soon to be buying one of these fine instruments but really want to know the difference myself.

Anyone?

I hear so many people change to the modern wiring....then I hear people say thats a kop out and it aint a 52 any more if you do this.

Whats the thoughts?

CC

Remeber that you also have the option of 4-way wiring, bridge, bridge+neck parallel, bridge+neck series, neck. I think aftermarket kits are available, perhaps a kit from Fender. (?)

Changing the vintage wiring to modern specs on a 52RI is very common and done right it won't hurt the resale value or anything else. That's why Fender includes the parts with the guitar.

What you'll get with modern wiring is this:

Front position (toward the neck of the guitar): neck pickup
Middle position: neck and bridge pickup
Rear position: bridge pickup

The tone control functions normally in all three positions - this is what you don't have now and why your neck pickup sounds quiet and bassy.

If you want to hear what this will sound like (allowing of course for differences in pickups, wood, and bridges of different models), try almost any other Telecaster in a guitar store.

Almost all other Telecasters with two single-coil pickups are wired the modern way. Grab a MIM Standard Telecaster or an American Standard Telecaster and you'll immediately understand how the modern wiring works and you'll hear the clear and bright sound from the neck pickup that you currently don't have on your '52 Reissue.

You'll know as soon as you select the neck pickup and play with the tone control. That same sound (or one pretty close to it) is in your '52 Reissue. You just need to change the wiring to modern specs.

Hey Hendrix,
The '52 telecaster stock p/u wiring was set for: 1) bass guitar; 2) neck pickup; 3) bridge pickup. The first setting puts the signal thu a 0.1 mf cap the other 2 settings put the signal thru a 0.05 mf cap. Both of these caps roll off the highs from the pickups. If you want a brighter sound replacing the caps will do the trick. I, for one, like the old bass guitar setting. It sounds like an old hollow body jazz guitar - so the 0.1 cap stays. Now if the other two settings still sound too dark for you then change the 0.05 cap for a 0.022 or even an 0.015 and way less highs will be rolled off. No need to change pickups. And you can get the same sound as the new wiring by putting the p/u selector switch half way between 2 and 3 and both will ignite.

I bought mine in 2004. It comes wired to the specs an original 52' Tele. If you go with the modern wiring it's no longer the "52' Tele" it 's supposed to be.

If you'd like to check out what other 52' owners have to say :

Take Care!
