Hey ! I'm want to get a telecaster, but I don't know which model. I've kinda narrowed it down to American Standard and Highway One. I haven't actually tried a telecaster yet  and I know the Highway One is a cheaper version , but I've watched a lot of videos and I think I like the sound of the Highway One better (seems to have a more rounder, fatter sound to it).

But what do you guys think ???

I just picked up a Highway 1 a couple weeks ago and I absolutely love it. I can't put it down.

I bought a Highway one, it plays great, the neck feels fantastic. Make sure play the one you end up buying. I needed mine set up a little bit better than the original set up to make it just perfect,it had a little fret buzz at first. You might consider the texas model if you want a hotter pick up. Cheers! 8)

Yes, you can get a Hwy 1 cheaper. However, I've owned both...and I promise you that you'll never regret buying the American Standard. The Am. Standard just has an amazing feel, and amazing tone. The neck just feels right, and the pickups are just phenominal!

Don't just take our word for it. You absolutely must go to a store and try out both...then make your decision.

I have one of each (2002 Hwy1, 2008 AmStd) - the Hwy1 is an 02, so it probably isn't quite the same as a new one. But with mine, the AmStd has a brighter more classic Tele sound. The Hwy1 is a bit more mellow/warm and lacks some of the vintage Tele spank.

I can find any material difference in overall construction quality (the electronics are different, but the wood working is all US). The playability is about the same though the AmStd neck is a bit faster. There though, remember that Fender is finishing them differently now than in 2002.

You won't regret getting the AmStd if your goal is classic Tele sound and playability. If you can have two or are looking for a warmer sound, then the Hwy1 is certainly a good choice too. If economics is your limit and you'd have to save a lot longer to get the AmStd, I doubt you'd regret getting the Hwy1 now instead.

+ 1 I can't give your a fair comparison because I just bought the American Standard and have no experience with the Highway one. Actually first tele I've ever owned. So try both!

Aren't the pick-ups on the Highway One more distortion-friendly than the pick-ups on the American Standard ???

I want to be able to play some heavier stuff too :P

I always thought the Hwy 1 pups sounded pretty muddy when running through a distorted channel.

Even on the tele side, the HWY1 and the Standard debate goes on

On the highway 1 to Am Std debate I have played both the Strat versions and I like them both I plan on getting a highway one. The Am std is what you expect from a strat the chime the sparkle. On the highway one it has what sounds like hotter pickups and on distortion if you crank it it does mud up but with good distortion and volume control it sounds like the dimarzios I had on a super strat backin the day.at lower volume it sounds like any strat. in my 70 fender twin I didn't notice much of a diference between the 08 highway 1 strat and a 90 Am std strat and a 00 am std strat
bottomline as its been said already get to the store and play them all your hands and ears will tell which one.

I had to modify my Hwy 1 quite a bit to get to where it felt and sounded the way I wanted it too.

My Standard needed nothing except a minor setup tweak.

Your mileage may vary :?:
