I'm considering the purchase a 2003 MIM Thinline 69ri Flame for investment purposes (and playing as well). The guitar has a white finish with a red flame design. The seller tells me that for 2003 only 200 were made. More were made in a 2005/6 year production run. Is $650 USD a good deal for a mint guitar plus HSC. There is not much info that I could find.

Just think.. a couple months ago that was new for 700, coulda got one used for maybe less than 650 :(

Out of the two thinline RI the 69 is my fav. I think for that price, you should jump on it. Considering they are gonna run near 1000 new after tax anymore.

Ignoring the investment value, the price is a good deal. I paid about $500 for my 2002 Lake Placid Blue 69 Reissue and there were supposedly only 500 of those made. A pink one (same year/model) owned by the same seller went for something like $750. I'm basing my "sounds okay" evaluation on those and other Ebay/Craigslist prices I've seen recently.

I remember those guitars for sale at musiciansfriend.com.

Is this it?

If so, the flames aren't "red" but just unpainted natural wood. Well, it's probably not completely unpainted - there's probably a clearcoat of some kind, but it's not red paint.

Mint condition? Yeah, I think that's a good deal, but that's just my opinion. I bet it will increase in value due to rarity as the years go by but you're not going to retire by selling this guitar.

The only drawback I can think of is the flame design doesn't appeal to everyone, but then again those Shell Pink and Seafoam Green thinlines from a few years ago don't either and they cost more now on the used market than when they were new.

Yeah I haven't got anything intelligent to add to this either except to say "Man that guitar looks WAY COOL!!!"

Cheers.

And it is great! Nice neck, though not U shaped as seen in the specs. Perhaps that was the 2006 version? I have the 2003 version. Pickups have been upgraded to Rio Grande Big Bottoms and they sound great. Can't comment on the originals as they were not included in the sale.

One amazing thing about this guitar is how light it is. The chambered mahogany is beautiful and very light, but still very resonant.

This may turn into my #1.

Sure wish there was more info on the web about it. If it really is one of 200, then that is awesome. Does have a "Special Edition" sticker on the back of the headstock.

FYI, the tint on the neck is sweet and the paint job, while not nitro :( , is very nice. Great gloss and depth to the exposed grain. Yes, the flame is created by leaving the mahogany exposed. Looks like the whole body was clear coated, then the white painted on while masking the flames, then more clearcoat. Nice job Fender.

Yes, it is a nice looking tele and probably plays well when set up properly, however, what no one here is addressing is the fact that it's made in Mexico and will not appreciate like an original '69 Thinline. I would enjoy it's inexpensiveness and jamb on disreguarding the appreciation factor altogether.

Sure, it is NOT an original 69, but Mexican instruments will appreciate in value over time, especially when they are Special Editions in limited runs. Not sure why there are so may people that slag the non-USA stuff. Maybe the quality control is not the same compared to US Custom Shop, but I have seen plenty of US made Fender guitars that are crap and plenty of MIM or MIJ/CIJ guitars that are excellent. I think you are wrong and taking an unnecessary negative attitude about Mexican-made instruments. Hell, without Mexico's less restrictive environmental laws nitro finishes would not be making the comeback that they currently are!

So, while it may not be as great an investment as an original 69, which of course has already appreciated greatly at this date, my MIM 69 Thinline Tele Special Edition will go up in value 10 years from now when probably half of those 200 are all that are left.

Even some less than desirable 60s Fenders (Coronado, Duo Sonic, Musicmaster, Bronco, even Jaguar and Jazzmaster were considered undesirable until the alt crowd started using then alot) are worth more now than ever. Same for 70s and 80s too. Some of the collectibilty (sp?) is DIRECTLY related to how rare the item is and some also has to do with the coolness/aesthetic factor, both of which are regardless of playability. Some of it has to do with being made in the USA, but a good product gets a good reputation, no matter where it is made. Add in the specialness of the item and it only adds value.

All that being said, I bought it for the looks, playability, feel and tone. Monetary appreciation is a purely bonus, should I ever decide to sell it.

Trem, I paid $225 in 1970 for a '69 Thinline. We are talking appreciation here. It matters not because I never intend to sell it and I have had some amazing offers. There is no comparison to current models from any country. I bought an American Deluxe Strat in '07 because even the American Standard felt "weak" and cheap for the money. Granted, the MIM's are much better than the MIC's, but not only are you promoting cheap non-American labor, toxic health practices, and American Dollars spent in country's that abuse our liberal policies, but you are also causing the parent company to think this is OK and cause their quality control to decline. I will buy Custom Shop, thank You, and American when ever possible. It is tempting to buy the cheaper instrument, I almost bought a '72 Thinline RI a month ago for my son who just graduated from college, but I deciced to go the USA way. We all do what we feel is right and this is how I feel.
