Hi everyone,

I don't know if anyone can help me, but I just picked up a mint used Thinline...really nice. The previous owner lost the 3 way switch cap and somehow wedged a Strat cap on the switch. When I say "wedged" I mean stuck like with super glue.

Any ideas as to how I can get the sucker off without destroying the switch?

I know this is a pretty silly problem, but I really want to put a top hat cap on it and I don't want to have to replace the 3 way.

Thanks for any help!

Well, I can only think of what I would do.

I'd most likely do some or all of the following...

1) Take an exacto knife and slowly make my way up the sides. Probably over a long time, not to damage the switch. When both sides were done, I'd see what was left and cut the rest away. Then sand off the rough stuff left by the glue.

2) Use a wide set of cutters and cut up one side. Similar to above.

3) Cut the switch, buy a new one and solder it in.

If you try to wiggle it off or pull it off, then you'd probably bend the switch.

heat up the top 10mm of a small knife with wooden handle and CAREFULLY cut through that switch cap like butter.

make sure the knife, or any molten plastic doesnt fall on the guitar.

I take no responsibility for any damage caused doing this, but if your careful, should be a breeze.

I have removed stubborn switch tips using the claw on a hammer. I just make sure to put something on the surface of the guitar and pull gently. I never had to pull hard, as it was more of a leverage issue than it actually being stuck on, though they may seem to be welded on...I've be very careful doing this on a Thinline though...

Cover the top of the guitar with several towels. Use a hair dryer on high to warm up the plastic tip, pull it off.

If it's super glue there are solvents for that. But be real careful not to get any on the rest of the finish.
