My husband traded for a 1958 telecaster with the case. The guitar is sunburst and the case is houndstooth. Can anybody give me an estimate on what it is worth. It is in mint condition. He doesn't want to play it but I want him too. He thinks it's worth too much. Any help would be appreciated.

The value will vary a lot depending on the conditions of the guitar, how worn it is, the frets, if all the electronics are original, color, if it has an original case... lots and lots of variable.

Talk to these people and good luck

Hello Llbertram1,

1958 telecaster, thats a nice accquisition.
If it were mine I'd be playing it, as for a value,
well you can get a nice new car for what its
value is make and model of car is dependent
on condition and originallity of the instrument.
Might be a PT Cruiser or might be a Corvette.
Best of luck with it.

Cheers.

It looks like it had never been taken out of the case. It is in perfect condition. Not a scratch anywhere. He told me to mention that it has the old style tuning keys. The ones that are slotted instead of have holes for the strings.

Contact Gruhn Guitars for an appraisal.

They can do appraisals from photographs.

An appraisal would be good to have for insurance purposes, too.

(I don't work for Gruhn or anything like that - just passing on some knowledge)

Your husband would enjoy owning a book called "The Fender Telecaster" by A.R. Duchossoir, if he doesn't already.

Vintage Telecaster enthusiasts call this book "The Bible", and for good reason. It's chock full of information and details of Telecaster production from the prototype through the mid 1980s.

This book will help him understand what he has and also make sure all the parts are original with detailed photos of everything from tuners to headstock decals to the date codes stamped on the pots under the control panel and more.

It's cheap, too!

Even in 100% showroom mint condition it's only worth $500 and since I'm a nice guy I'll give you $600. What do you think?

Just kidding.

It would be best to have it appraised by a reputable dealer.
It will have to be anyway before you can sell it as a mint condition original 58 telecaster.
There are alot of fakes making the rounds on Ebay and in the market.
Some of them quite convincing.
Some documentation of provinence would be in order.
An examination of the pots neck stamp and if all the soldering points are intact.
If it is truly what you think it is it is quite valuable and your husband could get a ton of contemporary gear he wouldnt have to treat as a museum piece with money left over.
It would be nice if we could see a picture.
By the way all Fenders before 1966 or so had the type of tuning pegs your husband describes so do many contemporary reiiisues.
They are easily obtainable over the internet from several dealers.
