What is the difference between the MIM and MIJ 72 Custom? Do they have finishes on the actual fretboard (maple version)? Is the MIJ one ash? Thanks.

the CIJ is ash and as every guitar from Fender they do have a finish on the neck, in this case, it's poly and kinda whiteish.

I don't know about the pickup's characteristics, but the Classic Series ones have better electronics usually (CTS pots, better pickup selector). The neck shape may be a little different too.

Generally speaking the MIJ/CIJ guitars are better quality than the MIM reissues. :D

If you can get a MIJ/CIJ, I would definitely recommend that over a MIM version. (and yes, I have owned both kinds).

I had both too, and besides a couple cometic things, like the color of the fretboard (darker rosewood and a slightly darker tint on the MIM neck), and the better pickup switch in the MIM, I couldn't tell one was "better" or much different from the other. Will depend on how much you gonna pay too, if you live far from Japan and you need it to be sent to you, this will make the CIJ guitar much more expensive in the end.

The primary reason that I would recommend the CIJ over the MIM is the neck.

The CIJs have a better feel and profile than the MIMs I have owned/played. :)

Mine was a D shape I'd say. Just a little more shoulder than the MIM. But both played just as fine, just a minimal difference in feel.
