I know that JOHN MELLENCAMP & BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN aren't what would be called guitar heroes, however they have used FENDER TELECASTERS for a long time. I modeled the TELECASTER that I am building somewhat after the look of there TELES. Who is your TELECASTER hero?[img][/img]

If you want to get really technical about it, Springsteen uses an Esquire fitted with a neck pickup so its not really a Tele. Close enough though.

Personally MY hero Tele player would have to be Keith Richards. You watch him play he's so laid back and relaxed he's almost going in reverse!

I had always thought that SPRINGSTEENS guitar was a TELE, interesting fact. Thank you.

The famous "Esquire" as on the Born to Run and Human Touch album cover is a Telecaster with an Esquire neck. He said it himself in a 60 minutes interview a few years back. It was also played during the Super Bowl half time show. It's really a good combination - 7 inch radius on C shape neck with the brighter Tele sound. I'm building one at the moment so if anyone knows it's pick ups specs - let me know.

Sheesh it's getting complicated now. I've heard and read so many different things in relation to Springsteen's guitar. I'll stand corrected in this case.

Andy Summers is my favorite. Read his book, "One Train Later". It's a very compelling, entertaining account of his life. He speaks fondly of his Tele thoughout the book.

Standard Tele necks are a modern C shape (like the Esquire) but have a flatter fretboard - 9.5 inch radius. The vintage Teles have the clubbier U shape.

Does Bruce actually play? It's hard to tell sometimes.

I wonder the same thing. I was watching the 30th Anniversary BORN TO RUN DVD and he did play then, actualy he played a a really cool riff on the song BORN TO RUN. The goofy part is that it took them 6 months to record that one song! Plus it has so many overdubs by so many different instruments that the guitar riff gets lost.
Don't get the wrong idea, I like the old SPRINGSTEEN stuff, however it is hard to here the guitar parts.

I think the unknown guitar hero on Mellencamp's songs is Mike Wanchic. They did a pretty good version of 'Pink Houses' in that pre-inaugural party, for Obama. He used a Telecaster, and Johnny used a Martin acoustic. I am a Mellencamp fan for life; BTW his old drummer was in the rhythm section, Kenny Aronoff, just one of rocks greatest drummers!
:)
