I've always been a Strat person, but today I had to use my Tele in band practice, and I realized something. I thought I didn't like twangy Tele tones, but it really grew on me today and it sounds wonderful in a band setting. I even used the ultra-twangy bridge pickup and it sounded great!

The problem, it's a Squier Affinity Tele with Squier Affinity Stock pickups. They're OK, but I know it can sound better with new pickups. I recently added Texas Specials in my Squier Strat and it made a huge difference in tone.

And since like I said, I'm a Strat person, I don't know too much about Tele pickups. I play praise and worship music with my band (depending on the song it can sound like anything from U2 to Lynyrd Skynyrd), blues, classic rock and some indie and alternative rock. I've been impressed with Fender pickups so far, but any suggestions would be helpful. :)

Somewhere around $200 is my maximum budget, and I'm not going to buy them in the near future. But I like to know what I'm saving up for, that way I have some motivation.

Duncan Broadcaster. Extremely versatile pickup. Vintage with a growl on the mids and fuller sound, smoother highs than the 54 (STL-1), but cutting tone and twangy if you want. And the price is low (58$ for the lead pu), so you are not paying more for pickups than you payed for the Squier.

here you can hear the sound samples of all them.

Cool, I'll probably end up listening to all of them.

I don't really mind paying more for pickups then the guitar, I actually traded for it. I gave my little brother my Nintendo DS and some video games, and he gave me the Telecaster he never plays.

EDIT: Wow, I really do like those '54s.

My only Telecaster pickup upgrade was installing a set of SCNs in a MIM Standard. What a difference! All the vintage Tele tones are there and the SCNs handle gain beautifully with no noise.

I also own a Classic Player Baja, a '72 Thinline Reissue and a Highway One and the Standard jumped to the top of the rotation after the pickup upgrade. The SCNs are that good.
