Hi all, will someone explain this to me. For years the '69 and '72 Thinline, '72 Custom and Deluxe were made with U-shaped necks. Now when I look at the products list they are made with C-shaped necks. When and why did this happen?

I was always interested in getting one of these models because of the U neck. I can't physically play a C. My hands don't fit on the neck. If they did change the necks, can someone give the serial numbers of the last models made with U shaped necks. Then I'll know what I'm looking for.

Thanks

Brillington: A new classic series '69 Telecaster Thinline comes with a U shaped neck; check it out by clicking the model and click on specs.

Different strokes for different folks:

When I was younger I wanted a C shaped neck because it was smaller than a bat-handle that you would get on a U shape or a soft V shaped necks. But now I find that the thicker necks don't create the fatigue I now get when I play my Strat Ultra. The remaining guitars have thicker necks, especially the Gibson L6-S and my old '71 Stratocaster; the Gibson ES-347 is the best combination of C shaped neck and thickness. The Baja has a soft V neck, which has the best feel from my Fenders. I never get the soreness unless I play the Strat.

I also think Fender thought it could sell more guitars if some liked the C, V, or U shaped necks, like you. It's all about guitar sales and marketing. It doesn't matter to FMIC, as long as you are happy w/ the product. I think the modified version of the Eric Johnson Stratocaster has a copy of a Gibson neck! That is pure marketing = dollars!!

Thanks qblue. I looked again and noticed the '69 still has a U. I was most interested in the '72 thinline and unless I'm crazy, that has been a U until I looked it up the other day. Right now I have 70's strat reissue with a U and wanted to pick a '72 thinline to compliment it. But if it's a C, it won't work for me.

I liked your different strokes for different folks comment. Most of my knuckles are near or over an inch wide. I have a thumb way over and inch wide. Put your fingers on a ruler and measure. Then you'll understand my dilemma. A C is like a pencil in way hand. Well hell, a U isn't that much better but I can handle it. It's like a drumstick in my hand. Thanks for your help.

Brillington, I think I also remember them being U shaped. I checked my 2008 Catalog, but the only specified model is the 72 Thinline and they say its a C-shape neck. Weird.. so maybe it took change in early 2008? You can try downloading the 2007 catalog and checking. Or maybe someone that has an older model could compare to a newer one to tell us.

Or just e-mail Fender
