I have a 2005 American Tele Deluxe with standard Fender tuners. I bought a set of Fender Schaller locking tuners as replacements. Do I leave the string tree or take off? I know they come off with Sperzels on a Strat, and common sense tells me not to use them now. Never really understood why Fenders have the trees and other guitars don't! Your thoughts........???

The reason behind the trees is to increase tension and help in tuning as the fender headstocks are generally "straighter" with the neck than a Gibson for example which is on more of an angle and supplys more downward tension keeping the strings more solidly lying in the nut.

Or at least thats what I've been told....I could be wrong.

In case they are staggered tuners I believe there's no use for the string trees, if not, you will want to leave the string tree at least the bottom one (for the high E and B strings) or they maybe pop out from the nut.

Like stated above, Gibsons don't need it because they have an angle on the headstock (but that also makes the headstock more fragile and prone to breaking at that angle).

They are staggered and there is only one tree (which is for the B & E strings). Is it because the tuners are staggered that you no longer need them??? Thanks for your help!

My American Deluxe Strat (same headstock angle ) came with Fender/Schaller staggered tuners and a string tree, so when I put Schallers on my MIM Tele I put a AM deluxe style tree on as well. I have not noticed a difference, but figured it was there for a reason.

Yes, if they are staggered you don't really need any string trees. So just try to unscrew it and see how it works.

I noticed that after I removed the "G and D" string tree in my old strat, these 2 strings - specially the G seemed to ring more, and felt a little more loose to bend, very very little, but I could tell a difference.

Fenders with staggered machines come with a single tree for the B & E strings. At least that's how mine came.

On my 06 MIM Tele, I had Schallers and left the tree in place.

Is it "needed"?

Who knows. But it sure didn't hurt anything leaving it on.
