Are teles made with one or two pieces of ash? Is there a benefit to either?

All the current Fender Teles I've seen that have an ash body are 3 (the majority)or 2 pieces. Only the Custom Shop uses 1 piece bodies, and it's not always. 1-2-3 pieces I don't think theres any difference, except that the grain may not match very well.

My American Standard is two-piece, the seam goes straight down the middle, between the third and fourth string ferrules. I had to look at the butt end to find the seam.

My American Deluxe appears to be two pieces joined just above the bridge. It's hard to tell from the front - there's only one spot where the grain changes enough to tell there are two pieces.

My Vintage Hot Rod is 2 piece, and also had to look to the edge to see the joint

I think depending on the model you get it can be two or three. I would believe that the MIM's or standard teles are three, while the high end '52 re-issues, two. Sound, pretty much the same

I looked at my Baja Tele, and it looks like one slab of ash. However, it is a Custom Shop design, and MIM! I'll continue to try to post pics...

One piece bodies are probably going to be extremely rare nowadays, because finding suitable pieces large enough at an acceptably cheap price probably rules that option out. :(

My recent 2008 Ash bodied AM STD Teles (I have three) all have two piece bodies and the grain matching is very good indeed. :D

I learned here today that the new '52 AV has a three piece body and not two. The weight of the guitars range from 7-10 pounds. Good stuff!

My brand new '09 is three-piece swamp ash. The left two pieces are flatsawn while the right side piece is quartersawn. The grain of each piece was oriented to be nearly seamless. For a two-piece top, it's desirable to have two mirror image quartersawn pieces as on an acoustic guitar. I've rarely seen that on regular production Fender Strats or Teles although it's probably more likely on expensive Custom Shop orders, if that option is available. Regardless, I judge a body on its weight as much as on its appearance.

According to Shawn at Fender Customer Service, an AVRI can vary widely in weight from 7 to 10 lbs. If you're on the hunt for this model, my advice is to audition as many as you can before pulling the trigger! To avoid back and shoulder problems, I highly recommend a Levy heavy-padded leather strap.

I guess they're not bookmatching the wood on the solid bodies like they do for the acoustics. You know, when you think of a Telecaster, you have to think of the 52 and the look of the grain. You got to have the grain! Some people believe that Leo started to paint the guitars because he couldn't always match the grain or the grain wasn't that nice looking un- painted. I tend to believe it was more based on the colors of the hot rods that were seen racing for pink slips up and down the mainstreets of Southern California. Hot Rods, Hot Surfers and Hot Guitars. Does it get any better than that? I had a 52 and a Rosewood Tele. I sold them both because I wasn't playing them as much as some of the other Teles I own. Now I am getting GAS again for both!

There are basically three species of "southern swamp ash" used for woodworking applications: Pumpkin (Fraxinus profunda), White Ash (Fraxinus americana) and Green Ash (Fraxinus pennsylvanica).

Pumpkin ash (Fraxinus profunda)

White Ash (aka American Ash or Fraxinus americana)
