I just read an article in Premier Guitar about custom made Tele copies and the people who buy and make them and I was wondering..... Would you rather buy a genuine Fender and fix it up to your needs or buy a custom made clone? I'm thinking that I would what to take a real Tele and make adjustments to suit my style, but I know people out there love to build their own guitars.

I am with you on that. Sometimes I wish I could turn a standard tele into like a jim root one but would rather not mess with it and just fix it to my needs and style. 8)

It depends on the price. Since I can do most of my own guitar work, unless its some major wood or woodworking issue, I'd just get whatever fits within my budget, then alter it to taste once I got it...

I would rather have the real thing.

Depends a lot on what you want from a guitar and how you want it. This concerns what kind of finish (poly x nitro) pickups and price, hardware price, kind of neck etc.

In my point of view it's a lot cheaper to get any used MIM Fender and swap pickups and maybe a couple more things later and save time than building and finishing a guitar from scratch, but all depends on how picky about the specs you are

I have done it all. I have bought expensive Teles, cheap Teles and everything in between. USA, Japanese, Chinese, Korean and MIM. It doesn't matter to me. Alder is Alder, Ash is Ash. One thing you can get bodies that are made from one piece of wood and I would believe that they do sound better than a two or three piece body. I believe the difference in the guitars are the parts, tuners, bridges, switches and PU's. My main 3 Teles that I have left are as follows. Lite Ash, bought at Guitar Center used. I up-graded the pups with SCN's and an S-1 Switch. It sounds very nice and can produce a nice range of tones. I also have a Chinese Squier Master Series Thinline Tele bought on Ebay. It can pass for a Jim Adkins JA-90 Telecaster® Thinline. I wanted something with two tone and volume switches and humbuckers. I up-graded the pups from the Duncan design to DiMarzio Bluesbuckers. It sounds hot. I haven't done anything to the tuners or the bridge and all the switches are the same. I don't play it much because it is signed by Peter White, the jazz guitarist. My 3rd is an all black Nashville Style Tele (3 Pups) that I put together from parts. Body is a Fender Body, neck from Mighty Mite. I was trying to fabricate a blackout tele. I ended up spending way too much money, but it was worth it. I orginally put in Lace Sensor pups, but they were installed wrong, so I swapped them out for jason Lollars and she sounds so sweet. I also own a Clapton Strat, and the black Tele sounds as good. The tech that put in the Lollars said it would be my best guitar and he was right. It just has such a nice range and can be so sweet. I orginally thought it would be my beater axe and I guess it still is. I love the 3 Teles and would never trade any of them. I think no matter your budget, you can create/modify a tele that will sound and look like you the way want it to look and sound. Good Luck![/img]
