How well stocked are the music stores in China? Do they have many brands? Why not start with a cheaper instrument until you can afford a genuine Fender Telecaster?

A Fender is worth saving for. Where there is a wil there is a way :-). If not today, then tomorrow. If the dream is big enough....
Fenders can be found at a fair price everywhere. Just make shure it's a genuine.

What about the Squier Classic Vibe Telecaster? They are built in China and are very good guitars - in my opinion, better than the Fender Mexican standards. And probably, they are not making counterfeits of those...But if you only care for guitars with a big "Fender" on the headstock (these Squiers have a small one  ) then it's another problem...

Surely you could go to a music shop, they won't sell fakes.
