I'm looking to get a great old school chunk of maximum twang out of an older japaneese tele custom and wondered if anyone had pickup/ string/ amp advice. Thanks.

You said twang right? :D Like country twang? Go with 9 string gauge (in case you play with 11s or 10s) that's the cheapest "mod" and it's easily done or undone. Remember, keep the strings fresh - replace then more often so you keep the chime and snap factor going. Then try your guitar in a Fender amp (preference for a Blackface or Silverface Deluxe, Princeton etc) if you can. The last thing I would do is changing pickups.

I totally agree with the other posted replies that you definately don't want to mess around with the pick-ups other than to mabey adjust the hieght
or distance between the pick-up and the strings. Also I find that running straight through to a Fender amp(preferably tube) is crucial to achieving that "Chunk O' Twang" you desire. Good Luck.

Ah, the magic formula for twang question comes up again.

The most important factor for twang in my guitars is the right hand. My suggestion is to pick down close to the bridge.
