It's like that with my Mom. I don't think I'm going to be able to get any more guitars until I'm out of the house, unless I pay for it myself. On the plus side, now that I can't get any more guitars I can focus on modifying the ones I have. :)

i bet you've heard the words 'but you can only play one at a time,' havent you.

But you can only wear one pair of shoes at a time.

I sure have. I've also heard "they all sound the same to me".

My latest axe the girlfriend got me as a gift. A Tele. I've trained her (inadvertently) to hear the difference from Strats, Teles , and Pauls. So my next purchase is a Les Paul standard. She doesn't like it, but she gets it. Pretty sweet. She just doesn't get why I have to rip my fenders apart to mod them. Oh well.

I promised my wife long ago that I would never question her shopping habits. Now it has come full circle to help me when I want to buy things!

It is said that a man tells a woman everything she needs to know about him within the first three dates.

But they don't always pay attention, do they? You take her to a sports bar so you can watch the game and she thinks she can get you to stop watching football. She sees your guitars and thinks she can get you to cut that stuff out.

:o

There are so many more BAD devices to have. They should never complain about a guitar!

When it comes to buying guitars remember:

It's way easier to ask for and get forgiveness than it is to get permission!!

Oh Tex, man if ever i had them rules? I had to work for my 2nd axe. I dont begrudge you anything though, your life and its your lot, not mine.

Back to the OP's question. Just tell her its your money, your the man, if she gives you too much gip your gonna kick her to the kerb.

I gotta say i tried that approach once and slept in the dog kennel :(

Also as long as you don't use it too often:

Try something like: " I know it was a bit of a frivolous purchase, but I love it so much . The brown to amber transition of the burst reminds me so much of your hair."

Or "Something in the tone just makes me think of your voice."

Women are nearly defenseless against properly applied flattery, as long as you save it for special occasions.

If your girlfriend/wife ever gives you grief for not listening, just tell her you lost focus because you you were so drawn in by staring into her eyes.

That one got me out of an argument when I bought my last amp.

Actually my wife is a lot more understanding than many.

Some years ago I took her to the music shop so she could watch me drool over American Stratocasters. At some point she said, "I like the blue one." That's when I knew I was over.

Yep, I got that, so my approach was to play a few of them. Same three songs, no change in amp settings and no deliberate change in my approach to the tunes, etc. After about 30 minutes, I no longer needed to explain "why" to my girlfriend. She heard and saw what it was all about.

Then, you can mention something like "for the same reason as a different color of essentially the same shoe works for you in different situations." The example will now make sense after the demo, rather than coming across as a challenge.

Good luck with the basses though, fellow posters. There, she can hear virtually no difference. However, she also points out that to be fair, I'm not playing a "song" (= the melody) on a bass and that she never has paid any attention to the bass in songs.

Here's what I have always done (married for 28 yrs).... Just go and get that guitar and right away right a song and tell her it's about/for her; even if it's really about the girl you seen at your last gig.............
