anyone find the electronics cavity foil-lined on a 1966 Tele? all the pix i have seen (eBay) show raw wood / unsheilded so i am trying to figure out if this was done at the factory or not.

lago -- evening and thanks. i've owned the guitar since 72' and bought it for $125 from a family who had purchased it for their son and he 'wasn't intersted' in it. it looked to me like they had bought the Tele w/HSC and a Champ new all at the same time and i just could never see them even taking it out of the case let alone to a shop or luthier. it's become a headache because with age, the foil's started to flake off and has made contact with either pot and i'll be playing and then all of a sudden, there's no sound, etc.

Hi. The foil lined cavities were likely in place because someone somewhere was making an attempt to shield PU's, and get rid of some 60 cycle hum. There are better ways, and it likely was never neccessary.

scoonis,
I have a 1966 Telecaster and there never was any shielding foil in the controls cavity. Remove it. Find the wiring diagram on the Fender site and be sure "other" mods were not done. If they were, re-solder back to stock.
The 1966 bridge pickup is very good. I put a Gibby '57 classic HB in the neck (a little routing) and removed the mag poles, leveled the volume to match the bridge singlecoil and WOW. No shielding is needed, even at stage volumes.

No foil on my '66. Just natural wood.
