If you were a beginner, what's the cheapest telecaster you'd buy?

What ever my budget would allow plus how serious I was about playing.

I fell in to that trap when first starting out, I bought myself a cheap Tele copy. It was heavy, awkward, and sounded awful. It gathered dust for a few months, until I realised the problem. I took it back to the store, and did what I should have done in the first place. I bought a MIM Fender, and found myself playing at every opportunity. It's a false economy going for cheap gear, if you're halfway serious about playing, you'll invest in some decent equipment.

Funny this came up - I had a related question. I'm a beginner guitarist, with a Squier strat, but I (and, surprisingly, my wife) think it might be nice someday to have a telecaster. I just saw a MIM, near new, telecaster on Craigslist for $250, and was wondering if that's a good deal. I really wasn't in the market, but if it's there....
Thanks for any thoughts you might have!

If it's in good shape it's a good deal. New ones go for ~ $400.

Maybe a Squier or MIM.

I'd recommend Squier Telecasters to any player of any level cause properly set-up, they are just as good as any MIM Fender I have played...

I would recommend a Standard Series Squier, or for around $300.00 you could get a Classic Vibe Tele. Both are great guitars.

If you have never played before and are just beginning I would maybe look at a Squire but if you are looking for a Fender than it depends on the style you play. Also go to a local music store and try some see which one feels comfortable for you. 8)

Brand new would definitely be a Squier Classic Vibe (300$). Or just save some more and get an used Classic Series (usually I see them for 450$ on Ebay). I got my Classic Series for 315$ in 2006. With patience and luck you can score

You really want a guitar with decent action and sounds.

Try to avoid very high action (unless it can be lowered without buzzing).

I'd look for a good "pre-owned" Fender Tele for a first guitar.

Interesting enough, as a beginner I had this question myself... I was going to get a Squier Standard Tele, but when I went to my local shop I noticed a used MIM Fender Standard Tele. Something was just very right about it. After playing it I realized that I was going to walk out of the store with it. Awhile back, when I first decided I wanted to learn I had a cheap Epiphone SG, which I think really set me back being that it was so hard to play. I would recommend going for some decent equipment, even to start out.

If you are just exploring, I think a second hand anything is fine... If you are totally committed to playing, I would buy as much Guitar as your budget can stand. Just my 2 cents

+1
My first ever guitar was a VMI Cruise. Piece of $h!t!!! It was so horrible that it discouraged me from playing. Years later I bought a decent guitar and found that it made me want to play more, to get better myself.

I'd go for a MIM model or a Squire model and have it set up by a good tech. Either of those will do a beginner justice. They are both decent guitars and will allow you to concentrate on playing rather than overcoming problems with the instrument.

Good luck and happy picking!!

Hello Srobb,

I've been at playing guitar for sometime and
still enjoy foolin around with the Squire models.
They're a good value and todays production
techniques produce a pretty decent instrument.

Mexico made guitars cost a bit more but refined
finish and elecrtonics. Go play em and see how
you feel about both products.

Whatever you get, practice,practice,practice.

Cheers.
