Pictures would be much appreciated too

Both 50's and 70's Teles have an oval walnut plug on the headstock, unless if it's one of the 70's Thinline, or Deluxe or Custom (then it must be a metal "bullet trussrod" adjustment piece). A way to tell them out easily is by the logo: Black Fender name and thick "telecaster" beside it, on the 70's models, and a thin, silver Fender "spaghetti" logo, with a thin "telecaster" to the "southeast" of the brand's name.
Both must have 21 frets and 3-saddle bridges (unless it's a 70's Custom or Deluxe reissue).

Though in Japan they also made/make some other models with maple fretboards that are not necessarily reissues, so pics are a must.

Best way to find out is to remove the neck and look at the markings in the neck pocket.

You should find something like TL70 or something...that is the model number, which can tell you what type of tele reissue it is.
