I am interested in some strap locks for my Tele so I don't accidentally drop it one day. However, I have not been too excited about taking out the factory strap pins for fear of stripping out the hole when installing the strap locks. I have considered the Planet Waves strap lock but don't know what effect they will have on the finish of the guitar. Please let me know what experiences you have had with strap locks on your Tele, what brand you would recommend, and installation tips? Its an ash bodied Tele if it matters.

Thanks.

I recently fit the Dunlop Nickel Dual Design Straploks to mine. The fixing screw was a bit longer than the original but I figure it's a mod worth doing! The originals are now packed away securely in my guitar case should, heaven forbid, I ever need to sell it. The design of the Dunlop Straplok is the closest I've seen to the original too so they don't look out of place. The 'Dual Design' aspect allows you to use a strap without the Straploks if you ever needed to. They're also available without this option. I'd highly recommend them!

+1 more on Schallers...They are pretty much a drop in for Fenders...In fact, Musicians Friend did, or does, sell Fender Strap locks that are actually made for Fender by Schaller. Pretty much any other strap lock uses a bigger screw than the Fender strap button screw from my experiences...that includes Dunlop and Marvel Strap locks...

Thanks guys. I bought some Schallers tonight to try out.

Update: Just installed them and love them. Study, mounted right to my factory hardware, and keeps strap away from finish. I could not be happier. Just need to buy another set for my strat.

Grolsch beer bottles rubber washers, great and cheap straplocks.
NO drilling required.

a bandmate dropped my old epiphone by accident due to the strap comming off one day. I was devestated as a nice big chip came out of the paint. since then I use these on my guitars and thankfully have not had an issue with the strap comming off since:

i since got a fender strat deluxe , which comes with the schaller straplocks, and they are solid.

id recommend the schallers any day, but the dunlop are cheep and do the job also.

Schaller is the way to go in my opinion. Every one of my guitars have them. When I install them, I take a toothpick and elmers wood glue. Cut the toothpick a little shorter then the depth of the hole, dip it in the glue, stick it in the hole and put your screw in. Let it sit about an hour and your ready to go. Makes for a nice solid bond in the hole. Hasn't failed me yet! Hope this helps ya out.

+1 on the dunlops.

Agree that in an emergency the strap pin is better than the schallers for straps without locks.

I use the dunlops on all my guitars. I also have different colors for different guitars. I would put them on my Martin acoustics, but all the Martin people don't recommend them.

Probably because with Dunlops, you often have to drill out the hole thats there to accomodate for the larger Dunlop screw...so while you could put them on a Martin or any acoustic...unless its goes into a block of wood, you'll just end up pulling the strap lock out. I am sure it can be done, but drilling holes into acoustics is not something everyone should try, so that is probably part, or one of, the reasons why Martin people do not recommend them...

I use these too on straps that I think would fall off. though if you have a tight fitting strap you should have no worries.

The new Dunlop dual's are sweet. No problems whatsoever.

I have both. I have Dunlops that I used on my old Charvel and that will be transferred to my new Strat, and I have Schallers on my Tele. I like the Dunlop system better and I didn't have to drill out the holes on my Charvel.

However, the top horn (if you can call it a horn on a Tele) hole got stripped when installing the Schallers. I had to put in a longer screw for it to work.

In my opinion, based on my experience, I'll be buying Dunlops from now on.
