So, hopefully by the end of this summer, I will have my 3rd electric guitar. I'm pretty much set on the '72 Tele deluxe sunburst. I just love it. It's a ridiculously badass looking piece and plays like butter. I know some people dislike the fender buckers it has saying they sound weak and lack high output of other humbuckers. But, that neck pickup is just so crunchy, I love it. But, I have never found a custom (fender humbucker in neck, single coil tele pickup in bridge) to play to compare to the double bucker Deluxe.

If you have one or the other or have played them, what do you think between the two? Throw your two cents at me.

I don't think they can sound very different on the neck position: same pickup, same type of body/neck construction, same player...
I'd vote for the Custom because I really don't like a Tele without anything other than a Tele headstock and a single-coil on the bridge position. But you should give both a try if you can find them in a local store.

I totally understand what you are saying and I kinda feel the same way. I've played the deluxe quite a few times and yea that neck pickup (same on both guitars) is amazing. The bridge bucker is decent, but not outstanding like the neck. Thats why I wish I knew somewhere that had customs to play. A combo of the nice neck bucker and a tele single coil bridge pickup that we all know sound delicious would be nice. Have you ever played a custom?

WHAT ABOUT NIETHER I THINK THE TELE SHOULD BE LEFT SINGLE COIL IN BRIDGE ALSO. I DO LIKE THE MINI HUMBUCKER IN THE NECK POSISTION. 60'S TELE ONLY WAY TO GO!!
CRANK IT UP!!

well i realize neither are genuine to the name tele being that they have humbuckers. but the deluxe wasnt meant to be strictly a new tele, it was meant to compete with gibson humbucking guitars. and another reason im partial to either the custom or the deluxe is because I already have the single coils of a strat and would really like another humbucking guitar that doesnt suck like the one i currently do.

however, i really like the idea of the 72 custom bearing both the bucker at neck and tele single coil at bridge. im hoping for some more info on this guitar.

ACTUALLY IF YOU LIKE THEM THEY ARE BOTH FINE. THE DELUXE IS A LITTLE MORE VERSITLE IN MY OPINION. I JUST DON'T LIKE THE FEEL OF THE 70'S NECKS. THAT'S WHY I SAID THE 60'S AND PUT A SEYMORE DUNCAN MINI IN THE NECK. I EVEN TOOK THE TONE KNOB OUT AND MADE IT A BLEND BETWEEN THE BRIDGE AND THE NECK. IT'S ALL ABOUT FEEL BECAUSE YOU CAN CUSTOMIZE ANYTHING TO BE WHAT YOU NEED.

thats another reason im leaning toward the deluxe. id also get stronger pots to increase the lowish output the 72s get some slack for. thanks to you, now im gonna look at a 60s. that would be cute of me to have a 60s strat and tele. and the mini in the neck is a good idea. i have a friend that modded his american tele with a mini in his neck and sounds beautiful.
