I' also seen someone using a flipped-over Tele like that recently.. but can't remember what video/band was that... damn that looked odd :) the Strat has the double cutaway design, so doesnt look so strange.

Here's Macca with his righty Esquire:

Anyone remember this old pepsi commercial. Always loved this one!!

Love the end where the guy is handing him that axe. The little guy looks like he's in awe. Remember how that felt the first time you saw that beautiful fender for the first time. Ahhh, memories.

Yeah, great commercial, and since it iwas 1953, makes sense it wasn't a Strat 8)

I think before jimi became JIMI God OF Guitar he was a session player with a number of blues and early rock players. He played a Tele with Mr. Guy on at least 1 of those records. I know because I listen to it regulerly.

I read someone commenting that in a certain book, a musician (can't really remember who was him or the name of the book, sorry) says Jimi had a white telecaster with him (in the early to mid 60's). I don't doubt he played one at least for a really short period. Probably the guy used whatever he had easier in his reach, pawning one after another and trying out different stuff. Did he played Strats before meeting Chas Chandler?

I remember seeing pictures of him with Jazzmasters, Jaguar, Duosonic, Epiphone, Fender Jazz Bass, different Gibsons, some strange hollow-body...I also remember of at least 2 people claming that they have seen a picture of Jimi with a telecaster (a full Tele not the Strat with Tele neck). Anyone?

According to Roger Mayer, Hendrix used a Telecaster on Hey Joe and Purple Haze, in the studio only.

I read that arcticle by Roger Mayer before and I think the guy is seriously wrong when saying there's a Tele in Hey Joe. All the tones there scream Strat to me. And it was documented before that Jimi used Noel's Telecaster in Purple Haze and Fire solo overdubs. Probably Roger just made a confusion.

There are a lot of errors in those "Jimi - Telecaster" myths.

Here's a link a post giving the results of research that I've done on the issue.

I'm hoping the new "Ultimate Hendrix" book that recently came out has some answers to this myth. I just haven't had a chance to buy the book yet.

I was so waiting for this post.

I did debate whether to take it up but thought 'nah theres people with far clearer reasoning and evidence than me using the forums'.

If you know of any evidence (which proves or disproves), please share it!

I could not find much of anything in any trusted, published, well-documented sources.

Cool Orville!

What I think it's interesting too is that, per example, I've seen people debating that Hendrix would have had to remove and flip the Tele's nut over, to be able to play the Tele the same way he did with the Strats (with the low E now going to our regular high E tuning post), and that it was not "worth the hassle". But that's not necessarily truth - He could have just flipped the guitar over and played it without switching the nut and strings around.. bending downwards, just like Albert King did.

Here is him doing it:
