You ever wonder what would have happened if Jimi Hendrix settled on a Tele instead of a Strat?

IMO he probably would have sounded better and had less tuning issues. What do you guys think?

It's well spread word that he overdubbed the solos in Fire and Purple Haze with Noel Redding's telecaster, due to an issue with the only strat he had with him at that exact moment.

I remember his famous quote: "The Telecaster has two sounds, a good one and a bad one."

Agree that he would be more in tune!

And he also played other guitars in the studio. Gibsons, e.g. And he sometimes played a Gibson Flying V in concert. Hendrix would use anything in the studio that would give him the sound he was looking for at the moment. His live sound was almost always completely different from his studio work, except for things that were recorded "live in the studio" such as Voodoo Chile (Slight Return).

In the studio there was a lot of influence and help from Eddie Kramer, too. Hendrix would describe the type of effect he was looking for, sometimes in terms of colors. Kramer would interpret that and line up the hardware necessary to make it happen. Hendrix told Kramer that he didn't need any help with live stuff. He had been playing live for so long that he knew exactly how to get what he was looking for from his equipment. It was in the studio that he needed help.

Ok, first, he did play a Tele. Second, there is a vibrato option. Ever heard of Bigsby?

Still, with a Bigsby you can't get the same effects as with a Strat's vibrato bar, they are also a little more problematic to re-string and well.. Hendrix just didn't like Teles much

Jimi used Tele's (and Gibsons) in studio.
If he were to play one live I bet it would have a Bigsby attached :D

I saw that Flying V in the vault at the Hard Rock in London. It's insured for £1,000,000 or so the tour guide told me.

A 60's tele running into a cranked Marshall emits a very thin sound with lots of squeals. Not a great live sound. I remember trying that combo out way back then. Ended up changing out pickups in my 68 Tele for Dimarzios. Jimi knew what he was doing.

I have seen it done in one of the rock movies/docs from the 60s...I am thinking it was Festival Express, but cannot remember for sure...but I have seen footage of a lefty playing a right handed Tele "Jimi"-style....
