If you are just starting out, I recommend any Fender Tele that your budget can manage easily. Another option is Squier Telecasters, as these are designed by Fender, but are made overseas in non-Fender factories, but the Squier Standard, Vintage Modified, anc Classic Vibes Series Telecasters are all good as well, and perhaps more reasonably priced for a beginner...

You'd be surprised, there are still some 20 year old Squiers that get good prices and still play great. I was just suggesting Squier because if you are starting out, I figure it might be easier to spend a couple hundred on something that you might know how long you are going to stick with it for, instead of the $700-to-thousands of dollars you would spend on an American made Fender. Besides, and I hate to say it, but from my experience, many of the things I bought that were Made In the USA don't last as long as things made elsewhere, or I ended up paying a higher price for a lesser quality product. Not everything, but many of the things...these days where it comes from oftentimes has no significance or does not factor in to how good or bad a product is. But thats just my opinion.

If I had enough of a budget to get an American made Fender Telecaster, it would be the Hot Rod '52 Telecaster...but I don't have $1500 to spare right now...

Then again, there's always the argument that if you spend the bucks now, you may be more apt to enjoy the entire experience. That is to say the guitar will sound and look better and most importantly play easier. Then if you decide its' not you you, you have a good instrument that you can get your money out of. At least that's how it is supposed to work in theory. I guess you can tell I've never sold guitars! 8)

If you want to go American, here are your basic choices, least expensive to more expensive ...

Highway One
American Standard
American Deluxe
Artist and Custom series

The best thing to do is determine your budget and then find a guitar store with a good inventory and try some out.
