should you trade an SG for a tele?

as most folk have said what i would have said in the detailed explinations, my only answer is...

yes.

why?

Because nothing is as versatile as a tele ( except a strat!)

I'm a Tele man so I'm bound to say "go for it"; but be aware...there's no going back! I'm the proud owner of 12 electrics including some Gibsons, Guilds and Washburns and I always find myself reaching for my Tele; gigs, writing or arseing about! As far as I'm concerned its the ultimate.

Springsteen and Dylan are Tele guys for sure. I own a (Mex) Standard Tele, which I think is a heckuva value for around $400, and an Aerodyne Tele which has a P-90 in the neck, and between those two and a couple of pedals, there aren't many sounds that you can't make. It sounds as though you definitely need some some snappy single coil articulation, which is just not the SG's strong suit, although a PU swap would help. But nothing does Tele like a Tele! Most guys who don't find them to their liking, simply haven't played them.

I agree with alot of people here, the SG has some nice qualities that you may find useful, you're best bet is to go with a tele, but I think you'd benefit from testing alot. I don't play much jazz or folk, a bit of blues, but I still love my Tele, it's pretty versitile. Test some teles, if you can't afford to keep both guitars then make sure you find a tele you love and get rid of the SG but I advise against getting rid of it.

I would keep the SG, save money, and buy a Tele. That way when you get interested in the other kind of music again, you're not kicking yourself across the room.

Hey Van the Man-
Without question if Jazz is your thing- then a Telecaster is what you should
be playing. Especialy if pure, clean tone is the sound you want. I to started out playing Gibsons to emulate the sounds of those whom made me interested in guitar playing(Tony Iommi, Jimmy Page, Angus Young etc.).
After many a SG-Les Paul-MelodyMaker-Flying V,I picked up a Tele and that was all she wrtote. The next time you are at Guitar Center try a Vinage Reissue or any Tele with a glossy maple fingerboard. Plug it in to
a Fender Tweed amp straight through and I'm sure you'll find the sound your looking for. I did. Oh by the way- don't forget to take your SG with you to trade in. Tone and Twang Forever

Yeah,
I agree with a lot of these guys. Keep the SG if you can. You never know when you want to reach back for some serious AC/DC and do that Angus dance. I play Back in Black at least 2X a week to keep myself honest..... on my Tele.
I have a Mexican Std (great guitar in that Agave blue) and even though I have a nice upgraded MIM Strat and a extremely sweet playing Ibanez Artist (LP clone), they seem to stay in the cases.
I can make the Tele sound a lot like either of the other guitars, but neither one of the others can do the Tele. Neither one plays as sweet either and to top it off, when all the other guys show up with loads of stomp boxes and other effects. All I need is my Tele , my Custom 5E3 D-lux and a good quality cord. No effects needed for off the hook fat rhythm and tone. It so easy to sound good with a nice Tele.

Got the Tele 6 months ago and all my other guitars are getting neglected:

MIM Strat
Ibanez Artist
Squier Esprit
Precision Lyte Bass

Hey Frankie,
You noticed that didn't you   . See what happens when you get ahold of a nice tele. I changed my Avatar, but maybe I didn't save the new signature properly. Here's what it should say:

I'm busy playing my guitar, so don't Tele me no lies......... :P

I would NOT trade the SG. I used to have a SG special with a single P90 pickup, that I wish I had now. After that I never will sell or trade a guitar, unless I have arthritis so bad I can't play.

I have used my Baja Tele for jazz, with no complaints. This just is a result of the incredible versatility of the guitar, and the S1 switching. I play a lot of gospel and this is my favorite guitar for that music. It's also a blues wailer! Still I think the Jazziest guitar is my Gibson ES-347w/ Dirty Fingers pickups. I almost bought a telecaster Thinline, because of the softer jazzier sound, but I had the Gibson already.

As for changing the pu's to P90's on the SG, it will still sound like a SG, even more crunchy, though. Besides the humbuckers are clear and don't hum like p90's might, as they are single coils. You'd mess up the collectibility value too.

The lesson here is different guitars have differing sounds and feel. Keep the SG and play it when conditions demand it. The Telecaster is an excellent choice to expand your guitar vocabulary. I wish I had tried them years ago.

I absolutely agree with most choices everyone has handed up here and I hope all the info helps you. My belief is (for what it's worth), you buy brand new, break it in the way you play, and never never ever for any reason get rid of it!!!!!!!!! you will regret it at some point.... Keep the SG and add to your collection.... good luck
