Please give me an unbiased opinion based on the information I provide. Just so you know ahead of time these are the types of music I like: Folk-rock, jazz, and blues. Basically like a Van Morrison, Dylan, Seger, Springsteen mix. I like any jazz music I hear.

So anyway for the past 3 years I've had an SG. I used to like ACDC, black sabbath, and all that kind of stuff, but I've explored so much music and now see my passion lies in "folk-rock" (the music I explained. My SG doesn't seem to suit this clear-sounding music if you know what I mean. I have a Gibson Dove and use that guitar all the time, but rarely use my SG. I'm not jumping to nay conclusions, but can you just give me some insight on what should I do? Should Imaybe trade my SG in at guitarcenter, or ebay and buy a telecaster? IS there any other guitar that would better suit my type of music than a telecaster? Should I simply put P90's on my SG?

Please give me some insight, thank you.

I use a Tele (Hwy 1) for most of what you're describing. It's great for folk (folk-rock as well), traditional blues, country, etc. Mine, which isn't as bright as some Teles, is also passable but not great for jazz. It would not be my primary jazz guitar.

Other possibilities to consider are either the 72 or 69 Thinline reissues. The 72 has humbuckers but the semi-hollow, light body doesn't have the sustain of an SG. The tone is cleaner but at the same time, will get you more into the jazz and modern blues sounds. The 69 has single coils and it's very bright when compared to my solid Hwy1.

The SG with P90s might work (I'd have to hear it), but to my ears, the options I've mentioned do work. In fact, I use either the Hwy1 or the 72 for much of what I would have used an acoustic for back in the 60s!

I use the 69 to stray into some light rockabilly.

Wow thanks! That was so helpful. I hope all the replies are as great as yours.

FYI I'm more into folk and folk rock than jazz, I just like that slight jazzy sound in the music if you know what I mean.. Like how Van Morrison and Springsteen use the influence.

Thanks a lot man, I'm going to be checking out some of the tele's you described.

Keep the SG. Having a humbucking Gibson is a great compliment to a Fender. Consider a '69 Thinline Tele. It sounds to be a good fit for you.

Hey man, i play Jazz, and love southern rock/country type stuff also. I have a telecaster and I absolutely LOVE it. I doubt i will ever get any other type of guitar other than a tele from here forward. I'd go for it

It's hard to go wrong with a good Tele. one of the things you might look into is the mex tele. if you add some of the stacked pickups that you can coil tap the guitar would actually work for some jazz stuff. Check some info on Brent Mason. his tele is set up to play all different kinds of stuff.

Well, you're certainly a good candidate for a Telecaster. But your taste in music will no doubt shift again, so if you can find a way to keep the SG, that would be good. The SG is a classic guitar. Historic, even. I just bought a Telecaster, but I would never give up the Stratocaster that I bought in 2001.

A Tele would be a good choice for the type of music you mentioned.

I prefer my Tele's with high output Seymour Duncans (Quarter Pounders) they are easily wired in so that you can switch between regular and high output modes so you get the best of both worlds. With both pickups selected it's a mean Jazz machine. Played with the neck p'up only it's mellower and with the bridge only it's nice and snappy.

The SG is not a BAD guitar for blues but it's not really it's strong point either.

I would advise you against getting rid of the SG. As some of the others commented, it's very possible that your taste in music might change at some point and you might miss the Gibson. If you can get the Tele in addition to it, that would be the best.

If you're not the type of person who occasionally likes to play other guitars for a different sound or feel, than I would say go ahead and make the trade. Eitherway, good luck. The important thing is to keep playing and have fun learning and trying new things.

Here's another vote for trying to find a way to keep the SG as well as buying a Telecaster. I have a Tele, and I would never get rid of it. I would like to have a SG. I would get rid of my ESP/LTD for it in a heartbeat. But, not my Tele... or my MIM Strat for that matter.

You like having to retune during a song...? SG's don't stay in tune real well. Lose it, leave the darkside and come into the light :D

say keep the SG and add the Tele to your collection. If you get rid of that SG there's gonna come a day when you wish you still had it.

I too sold an SG, but I will get it back one day, he isn’t a collector and never plays it. I say keep the SG, and listen to what kind of pickups sound good to you and install them. That would be the cheapest route. You can’t go wrong. But, if you have the money, get a Tele and start your gas. Although, you maybe sorry because, It's an addiction. I started out simple enough with a Thinline and moved onto building up a collection. I don’t play them all, but I like to have them around. Most of the time I just play a Parts-caster with EMG’s and it sounds good to me.
