to ask if they would rout a slot for a middle PUP for me on my MIA Tele. They do not do anything like that. I'm kind of disappointed. I would rather have the factory do something like that. Has any one out there routed for a new PUP?

I haven't done it but I do a lot of wood-working and I have the tools and equipment.

If you're going to do it yourself make sure you use the proper tools - a good router with the right bits, a template, and some way to clamp the body firmly in place without harming the finish. Fortunately the Telecaster body is nice and flat in that area.

And of course you'll need to cut an opening in the pickguard. Probably better to just buy a new one from Warmoth. The pickguard will show you where to rout the new cavity.

Work of this type is well within the capabilities of most people. The people who get into trouble are the ones who don't read up first and don't get the right equipment.

That all being said, if I wanted to do this on the cheap I'd use a hand drill to just drill a bunch of holes in the area where the pickup will go and bust out the waste with a chisel and hammer. But no American Telecaster deserves that, and just think how you'd feel poking a hole through the back of the body.

So if you're not in a position to do it correctly, go to a technician who can.
