Like a fool I went into town today while visiting parental types to see if I could find any guitar shops (had a quick look on yell.com first)....

... eventually found a guitar shop which was full of "Indie" guitars (that's a make, apparently, not just a type of music). OK, scratch that one, I just want a Fender or a Gretsch at the moment, even if I can't afford one.

Next guitar shop I find full of acoustics... then found the next window along was full of Cort electrics. Wasn't going to go in as Cort are better, but still I wanted a genuine MIA Fender. I had time to kill though, so I had a quick look.

Went into the electric side and was surrounded by all sorts of Cort guitars, which are nice but.. wait.. there's a Fender. One Fender, all on its own. A telecaster! And it's in 3-tone sunburst, exactly as I want! And lo and behold it even has the Made in U.S.A. text!

I dared to take it off the hook - it was hidden behind the door, quite high up, but I figured I could at least get a feel for what one day I'd be able to afford.

Tentatively I dared to ask the price, expecting something near to a thousand (UK pounds), given the exchange rate and that the cheapest online I can find is nearly £800.

"Oh, it's a good price. About £350 I think it is. I'll just check..." quoth the friendly guitar-addicted shop owner.

One quick phone call later...

"Sorry about that ... I was wrong... It's £499."

So I walked out with a brand new, full hard case + case candy, free set-up today, in 6 months and 12 months time, and everything, Z7 serial number but seems to be 2008 spec 3-tone Telecaster for under £500. That's less than 730 USD.

I'm happy with it! But I have to wait till tomorrow before I can plug it in again... it's sitting in its case saying "play me... play me...." in front of me....

So much for not spending much money...
