Hi,

I'm thinking of getting a telecaster blackout and I want to put in humbuckers is possible. I've heard that they don't fit since the blackout is single coil but I've also heard of people that have put them in. If anyone could tell me if it's actually worth changing the pickups and if so which ones to get.

If I could also get a tutorial for changing them, that would be great also :)

Thanks,

Tchar.

i've done this on a TELECASTER THINLINE ('69 re-issue) using a SEYMOUR DUNCAN DOUBLE STACK humbucker in the neck position, along with a push-pull pot ( that disengages one of the coils, allowing me to have either single- or double-coil sound) ... this will give you a hotter and fatter humbucker sound (with greater sustain) when you want it, but retain the cutting, "twangy" tele sound from the bridge pickup ... it also looks completely STOCK, since the DOUBLESTACK allows you to retain & reuse the factory "lipstick" pickup cover ...

that's because the DOUBLESTACK has the same form factor as a single coil pickup, it's just deeper (since the coils are stacked vertically on top of one another instead of horizontally side-by-side) ... this may require some light chiseling inside the body cavity to provide clearance on the bottom of the pickup for the wiring (depending on how deep the stock factory cutout is in the body of your guitar), but that is WAY better/easier than having to use a router to cut a bigger/wider hole in the face of your tele!!! ...

one thing (the only negative) that i have found with the SEMOUR DUNCAN DOUBLESTACK is that you lose some volume when you split the coils (to get the "vintage" single-coil tele sound from the neck humbucker) -- so you will want to set the neck pickup as high/close to the strings as you can to avoid having a lot of volume dropout when switching from the bridge to neck pickup ... that is not an issue if you DON'T choose to install a switch (like a push-pull pot) for single-/double-coil splitting ... but if you want to retain the full range of vintage tele sounds PLUS having a built-in humbucker OVERDRIVE "gear" in your rig, i would highly recommend it ...

rock on!
