Hi all,

Just got a used 72 Telecaster Deluxe Reissue (2006 made).
I love the neck, tone and how it looks.
But there's a big problem.
It is much too NOISY!!!

There's this buzzing noise that goes away when I touch the strings/bridge/PUP cover, etc.
But untouched, this guitar is buzzing MORE THAN a single coil Strat.
Yes, this Tele with humbuckers is buzzing worse than single coil!!!

Even through clean channel of my amp, it is buzzing.
And this Deluxe has two humbuckers (Fender's Wide-range PUP) and I don't think humbuckers should be this noisy and buzzing.

And it's NOT my amp. (I use Peavey Ultra 212 tube amp)
My other guitars with humbuckers are dead quiet through the same amp.
So I know it's not my amp.

I took the pickguard off to inspect the wiring, and everything was solid.
I even did all re-wiring just to make sure, but it did not help at all.

Replacing the pots to 500K made the buzzing worse and I had to go back to 250K.

Can anyone help me to solve this annoying buzzing problem?
Thanks guys!!!

It's not properly grounded. Check the ground wires. The fact that it goes away when you touch metal is the indicator. You're body is effectively grounding the system when you touch it. Good luck! Hope this helped

Thanks for the input, terrapotomus.
But I'm afraid the problem still persists...

I had suspected the grounding issue.
So I checked all the ground points, and I even did complete re-wiring/re-soldering by Fender's wiring spec just to make sure.
And I also checked two ground points 1) under the bridge and 2) on output jack and re-soldered those as well.
But all that work didn't do anything.

I also tried different wiring from Seymore Duncan's wiring instruction, which was slightly different from Fenders. But that didn't help either.

And all the grounding wires were connected, and I found no disconnection using multi-meter...

Maybe, there is a problem in the pickups?
But it's not like the buzzing is coming from only neck or bridge pickup.
The buzzing occurs in all 3 neck, bridge, and neck+bridge positions...

Any idea what's going on??? Thanks...

do you have a wire specifically grounded (screwed into the body)? SCN pickups have a wire coming off the ground that screws into the wood to make sure it's good and grounded. It seems like a good idea to me, though I haven't seen a lot of guitars actually have this. If it's not a grounding issue then I'm completely stumped since it has all the symptoms. Hopefully someone else can provide some more insight or a solution. Good luck, and I hope your mystery get's solved.

Hi terrapotomus,

No, it does not.
The two ground contact points are 1) to the bridge, and 2) to the ground terminal of the output jack.

Now, here's the odd thing.
I took the guitar to a local tech and he plugged that guitar into a small 15W practice amp. And guess what? My guitar was DEAD QUIET!!!
And then he tried another amp (all tube 50W Kustom) and again, no buzzing and dead quiet!!!
So he said that the problem might be my amp...

BUT, my other guitars (Fender Deluxe Strat w/vintage noiseless PUPs & Ibanez RG350) are dead quiet through the same amp (all tube, Peavey Ultra 212 60W combo)...
So what is going on???

I tried using a different power outlet for the amp, but this Tele is still buzzing like crazy. But with my hand on metal parts, it becomes dead quiet.

And the buzzing occurs only in preamp gain stage. If I turn up the preamp gain, the buzzing gets louder. But postamp gain volume doesn't affect the buzzing...
I very recently replaced all 4 preamp tubes, but the buzzing happens with the new and old tubes, regardless....

Man, I am totally and completely stumped...

Seriously... what the hell? Haha the only advice I can give I'm sure you've already thought of: bring both the amp and guitar to a tech and see if they can find anything. Bring in another guitar for comparison. I haven't the slightest idea why this would be happening, but maybe they can figure it out. I wish you the best and let me know what you find out. I would love to hear the explanation.

Sorry to hear about your guitar problems KYSohn, but like Terrapotumas I'd love to hear the solution. Good luck dude, let us know what the problem is/was.

Yes, the tech actually suggested that I'd bring my amp with the Tele to find the cause of the problem. But this amp weights about 75 lbs! And that shop is good 20 yards away from the parking lot!!! D-oh~!!

But here's what I found.
With my other guitars, the amp is making a very very faint buzzing that's almost inaudible unless I crank up the gain.
But this Tele seems to intensify the buzzing much more so that my other guitars.
Yet, the buzzing gets much much manageable when I turn down the tone control to around 5 on the guitar.
So it seems that the buzzing might be about the guitar bleeding too much high frequency treble through the ground???

So what I'm thinking of doing is to replace .022 capacitors in this Tele deluxe to .047 to bring down the tone of the guitar to more bass side and cut off some treble range.

Hopefully, hopefully, this will do the trick. I'd HATE to drag my heavy a%s amp all the way through the parking lot of that mall where the tech is... :x

I have the same problem!
I have a RI 72 Custom with the same PU which I play out a DeVille. I also took my guitar to my local dealers and through other amps it was dead quiet

I then checked my amp out and nothing wrong on that side as any of my bandmates and friends guitars are fine out of it, yet my WRHB buzzes unless I too touch metal.

Wtf??!!?

I've got the same issue with my 52' RI. It goes away at gigs. I think all of our problem is related to an open ground in the house circuit. My house is almost 60 years old with no ground from the electrical panal.... I still plan on sheilding the guitar as the there is noise even with Dimarzio Area Ts in both neck and bridge.....
