I have a 72 thinline RI and I love it, but it is far from a traditional tele sound. From what I read, it was created to compete with the les paul sound.

So if you are going for a straight up tele, the 72 isn't going to be that guitar.

Like the poster above me, if you have the means (some people dont have a guitar center down the street), I would try them both out.

I have one of each (72 Thinline is circa 2002 and the Hwy1 is 2004, so both predate the current redesigned Hwy1 series). Ideally of course, try them until you're sure. But if that's not an option, the Hwy1 is a modestly heavy block of wood and mine is a bit mellow for a Tele. Fiar sustain and without any excessive twang.

The Thinline has a somewhat crisper sound and higher output; you also get a bit of the "woodiness" in the tone. I use the Hwy1 for country music and also some jazz. I use the Thinline more for blues and rhythm.

I'm not much of a rocker but I'd call it a toss up there. More sustain from the Hwy1 but the Thinline has higher volume output, though I find the actual tone to be a bit thinner than the Hwy1. If I had to choose, I might lean just slightly to the Hwy1 and crank the amp.

I absolutely love my 72 TL. I bought it to be a back up to my 2001 Am Standard Tele but the 72 TL has since took number 1 on the depth chart. A father loves all his children but always has a favorite I guess. I agree what was said earlier though, it really depends on what sound you are going for. Every time I pick up the 72 she begs to play blues.

Only YOU can answer that. If you're able to get a hold of each guitar, just play them, and see what gives you the sound you want.

I have a '72 Tele Thinline and I've been very happy with it. Most people that have heard me play it, tell me that they love the sound of it (the guitar, not me). I have the natural finish, and it's also a very pretty guitar.

Hello Okocaster,

I'm with Markenbach,
the Highway One is more
inline with traditional Tele tone.

Best of luck on your decision.

Cheers.
