I Agree with the Strats being More Forgiving,
However, As far as the fat tone goes, My Tele FMT With the Dual Duncans hooked up to my Marshall will cut You wide open with Her Sharp & Flats.
Harmonics Are insane , And she plays Blues, Hip Hop, Funk,Country & Metal very nicely.
Most versital Setup I've ever had!!

Props to the 72 Tele Custom ,And the Sqiuer Double Fat Tele Delux that I had back In 2001. I Bet those Johnny 5 Tele's sound pretty sick too.

And have You'all heard the Tele in "They Say" From Scars on Broadway ?
It's mind Numbing!!

I think it's all part of the "sound" pallet. My '91 Am Std Tele has great tone with 12's... that's just another part of the deal... strings certainly have a LOT to do with tone and feel.

I guess it depends on what amp you are using or what sound you want to get. In the 70's I used my 1967 tele through an Acoustic 150B bass amp in a band covering the Stooges and original material. I could really get the thing to growl and feedback.

In a bluesy mood or country stuff, it gets sharp through my 1962 Vox Viscount.

My 2001 does seem a bit thin at times through my Line6, but it depends what effects may be running.

I guess it can sound that way. I know during recording gigs that most Tele players seem to go for that 1 classic sound.

However, if you listen to "Marwa Blues" from the George Harrison "Brainwashed" CD, you'll hear several Teles and Strats with the most gorgeous variety of tones coming from them.

No one handled a Fender like George.

That's kind of the point of a telecaster... I have an SG which is a really "strong" instrument and I kind of wish I had a tele to be honest.

that's the point i was going to make - i. e., the tele is to fender what the sg is to gibson. if you get the sound just right, it'll cut right through any rhythm section and stab you in the face. roy buchannan, andy summers, outstanding sound out of their tele's. zappa played an sg for years and it cut right through too. yeow! check out roxy and elsewhere!
i love my telecaster.

I think Clapton had the best raw SG sound around back with Cream. Two Fender dual Showman amps turned up to 11 filled the bill when I saw them in Phoenix at the Little Star Theater. The gig wasn't really advertised. We found it one night just out for a cruise. We didn't have a clue who they were. What a sound!

I couldn't believe that only three guys could make that sound. Bruce played an EBO through three Marshall stacks... The next week Sunshine of Your Love was released.

Later on I went to see Blind Faith. Before the show started, they showed a film clip of Clapton being interviewed about the sound of his SG. He didn't use a pedal, and he demonstrated some of his technique: "Turn the amp up to ten. Turn the guitar pots up to ten. It sounds like this..."

I'd love to see that clip again. Awesome...

By the way, when Blind Faith played "In the Presence of the Lord", Clapton stomped on his wah pedal and nothing happened, so he just WAILED away.
It was great.

Delaney and Bonnie warmed up for them. During the encore, both groups were on stage jamming and Bonnie got pushed off the stage and fell about eight feet to the concrete floor. They took her away on a stretcher while the band played on... Nobody knew she had fallen...

I didn't realize Bruce played and EBO. I've got one from about that era but not sure exactly what year. When I bought it, the finish had been stripped and it was in pieces. A friend refinished it jet black and re-assembled it. It sounds great, far more alive than the Jazz Bass I used to have.

there've only been a few 3-piece bands that would fall into that category:
king crimson, (fripp, bruford, wetton)
the police
beck bogart & apice
to name a few. king crimson used to do the "live" studio stuff like led zeppelin... you know - rent a few hours, turn the 16-track on, mix it down... maybe throw in a few overdubs for some extra texture, and release it.
spontaneous music... gotta love it!

( i believe we've strayed from the original subject... sorry dbrodie)

I think a good clean boost pedal can solve that problem.
