I'm with mthorn00. My American Power Deluxe Tele is the most forgiving, easiest to play guitar I own.

I would say yes but that was in comparison to a Vintage Hot Rod '52. After playing the Vintage Hot Rod one day I took my '06 Am Standard to the local luthier and had Fralin Blues Specials put in it, not so thin anymore. 8)

There will always be variation among different versions and models. But in general, Telecasters have a bridge pickup that is much stronger than a Stratocaster bridge pickup. The Stratocaster's bridge pickup is well known for its jangly chimey sound, but it is so weak that people often put a metal plate underneath it to strengthen the magnetic field (a la Lindy Fralin) or they replace it wholesale with a humbucker. In contrast, the Telecaster bridge pickup barks like a dog it's so strong. It is comparable to some humbuckers in its output.

Not to me they don't. Especially my 72 Tele Custom RI through my Marshall Guv'nor and Little Big Muff PI and HR DeVille 410!
Love 'em.
Plus Just a single coil powered ones goin through a valve amp can sound absolutely huge!

In context, yes ... but that's why I love the Tele sound. To illustrate, a coworker recently went looking to buy his first Tele after trying one of mine. He's a LP guy from day 1 and also pretty much always playing through high power amps and typically with massive distortion. So when he tried a Tele through a small amp, naturally he thought the sound was very thin and far on the treble side.

This isn't to say that you can't get lots of crunch out of a Tele but only that it isn't the natural sound.

IMHO those that play with massive distortion all the time have no idea what their axe really sounds like anyway. I realize there is a different tone with guitars (even distorted) but c'mon! A LP is going to sound fatter than a single coil; that's why we have a choice. The new guy in Bad Comapny uses a Tele; and it sounds just fine to me.

Exactly, although my band calls for certain levels of distortion, a Tele sounds its best clean through a valve amp, especially a Fender....the true sound of guitar.

Try the four position switch made by fender. It gives you an extra setting that has both pickups in series so you basically get a humbucker tone. I got one for $15 on e-bay and it was a lot cheaper than buying a humbucker and I still have the original tones of the guitar.

Teles can be treble-monsters, but the amp is the best way to tame them. Brad Paisley for example gets a huge fat tone out of his teles in both pickups.

Amps that are voiced darker typically work in situations where a tele needs to be BIG sounding.

I've got a brand new 08 MIA Standard. I like it but everytime I pick it up after playing my Strat I always think it's a little week/thin. I play it through my Super Champ XD. Now I know the SCXD not the greatest amp but it's a good amp. Besides I like my Strat through it. It's not that the Tele sounds bad I just think it's lacking. Anybody else out there feel the same way? Maybe I'm just a Strat guy.

That's kind of the point of a telecaster... I have an SG which is a really "strong" instrument and I kind of wish I had a tele to be honest.

There are these little round things on the amp called "Tone Knobs"; there's also one on the Telecaster...try turning them counter-clockwise (toward the "Bass" side).

I see so many people who turn the knobs on their guitar (and occasionally their amp, too) to 10 and never try manipulating them a bit to get more tone or texture.

My Telecaster's sound was always on the bright side, but it is by design. As the others have said, you have to play around with the controls to get the sound you like.

Back in my playing days, I used to play it through a Sunn stack. A huge monster with four twelve inch speakers and lord only knows how much power. Believe me, there was nothing weak about that.

I have a MIM Alder Tele that I swapped the pickups out in (see below) and it's thick and beefy for rythym. My only complaint is that there is no good lead tone. So for rythym no it's not thin but for leads it is.

PS
I don't know how you run your tele but I run all my guitars through some overdrive at all times and even if your into country Brad Paisley's tone is fairly overdriven and the same could be said for many others

I've only ever heard a tele neck pickup sound thin. The bridge is usualy great. A decent tele will give any gibbo a run for their money.

On the contrary, a good tele neck pup makes for an awesome thick blues lead sound. (If I could only get the bridge to have a thick tone for leads).

:D I started playing my Tele a lot after I was bitten on the hand by a Brown Recluse spider 6 months ago and just playing was hard and I never realized the work you have to put in to get your hand back in shape(they weren't sure I would be able to play!) and Tele's are not easy when you are used to Strats,Les Pauls and Ibanez! I am now playing my Tele almost exclusively (wish I had got one years ago!) and when I go back to my other guitars, my playing is even better than before! Also try using a compressor and you'll get that "twang they are so famous for!
Give it a chance and keep at it and you will love it!

You can see the pictures of my hand on myspace.com/flyingbezerkbrothers

WHEN I FIRST GOT MY AM.STD TELE..IT'S A 93. I THOUGHT THE SAME AS YOU. I WAS PLAYING 2 DIFF. STRATS ON THE GIGS BEFORE I GOT THE TELE. I AM NOT FAMILIAR WITH YOUR AMP. I USE EITHER A HOT ROD DELUXE 1-12 OR BLUES DEVILLE 4-10. THEY'RE ALL TUBE. A LOT WARMER AND FATTER TONE WISE THAN SOLID STATE. IS A MATTER OF PREFERENCE. BUT THERE IS A HUGE DIFF. TO ME.
TRY READJUSTING YOUR TRB/MID/BASS/PRESENCE. AT HOME THE EQ'S AND TONE SOUND DIFFERENT THAN LIVE. MY SETTINGS FOR TELE ON THE AMPS..
TREBLE @ 1 OR 2 O'CLOCK..MID @ 3 - 4 O'CLOCK. BASS @ 1 O''CLOCK. AND BACK OFF ON THE PRESENCE. SPECIALLY AT HOME!! NO NEED FOR IT. VERB SET LOW..
ALSO..I HAD INSTALLED A FENDER AM.STD. MIDDLE STRAT PICKUP IN MY TELE. I MISSED MY STRATS BUT LOVED THE TELE.
THIS WILL HELP A LOT. GREAT SET UP. AND PUT IN A STRAT 5 WAY SWITCH.
ARE YOUR PICKUPS SINGLE COIL OR SCN HUMBUCKS?
I FIRST HAD 3 AM.STD. PICK UPS IN MY TELE. 2 TELE..1 MID STRAT. ALL STOCK AM.STD'S. I LOVED THE TONE...BUT WANTED FATTER.
I RECENTLY HAD PUT IN 3 SCN'S ... I HATED THEM AT FIRST. THAT SINGLE COIL TONE WAS OUT THE WINDOW,.
I EVENTUALLY GOT USED TO THEM. BUT MAY GO BACK TO THE AM/STD'S I HAD IN BEFORE IN ANOTHER TELE I AM BULDING. IS A PROJECT.
I GOT A NICE NATURAL FINISH FENDER TELE BODY L.HAND..I AM A LEFTY.
I NEED A AM.STD. NECK..I LOVE THAT NECK.
GOOD LUCK...I HOPE THIS HELPS SOME. HANG IN THERE.
IT'S JUST A MATTER OF AMP EQ BETWEEN THE 2 GUITARS.
THE MORE YOU PLAY IT..THE BETTER IT WILL SOUND TO YOU.
TELE'S ARE A DIFFERENT ANIMAL. IT'S UP TO YOU TO TAME IT.
MAYBE GET A DIFFERENT AMP FOR THE TELE. HIT A G'TAR CTR. AND SIT WITH ALL THERE AMPS...FUN WAY TO SPEND AN AFTERNOON!!
