I've done it for the third time since I've had it. Do any of you put toothpicks in the holes or do anything else when putting the neck back on?

I have never taken the neck off. Just curious, why do you remove it?

If there is nothing wrong you don't. But certain problems could require you to remove the neck. Let's say it's your project guitar and you want to refinish it. Or the neck is warped and needs replacing. Some people take the neck off to ship the guitar.

I have found that taking a neck off is a pretty low risk operation. With care you should be able to get it back on without incident.

Oh. I don't refinish the neck pocket in the body or the back of the heel. I preserve the original mating surfaces.

Theres a need to take the neck off for truss adjustment on some tele's. Aside from that i dont remove em. Unless your having neck movement problems theres no need to re-fill the holes. occasionaly some wood glue in the hole before re-screwing may help. You cant just keep cramming wood in there and re-screwing, eventualy something will give out.

I agree. Don't take it off unless you need absolutely to. And taking necks off for shipping proves to be useless. Fender Custom Shop ships all over the world and never takes the necks off even Materbuilts that are 5 G or more...so why should anyone else?

I don't have the confidence in myself to remove a neck. I've always had work done on my guitars by a Luthier.

I've not taken the necks off any of mine but thought about removing
one or loosening it enough to shim it a tad. Just never got around to
it though. It is still pretty much to factory setup measurements
and frets/plays good. Only a slight truss rod adjustment was made on
a '52 RI. Haven't done any on the other 2 ('62 RI) Teles.

I've heard of installing threading inserts and using Allen machine
screws on the neck because of taking the neck off when flying to fit
the guitar into a luggage bag.

I have taken a few necks off and never had a problem putting them back on. Wasn't a need for a shim or any other adjustments, I just wanted to take them off to see how they fit. I have adjusted my truss rods for all my guitars for weather changes, but other than that, never had any problems. If you think there is a need to take your neck off, then go ahead it's easy to put back and screw back on.

Well I'm building a tele so the neck isn't on yet...so haven't taken it off per se haha. It really isn't that big a deal as far as taking it off. If you're constantly doing it, then yea the holes are going to give out, but it'll take quite a few times and honestly it's unnecessary unless you adjust the truss rod at the heel or are refinishing it (like others have said).

Just a side note......
You can eliminate removing neck for heel truss rod adjustment
by making a "tool" by taking a cheap long handle large tip screw driver,
heat the tip, place in a vice ~1/16 to 1/8" in and slowly bend 90 degrees.
It is easier to do with a screw driver that doesn't have a darkened
(heat treated) tip. Still can be done with HT tip above the dark area.

I've taken them off a couple times on a couple different Teles. Sometimes you need to remove the neck in order to remove the pickguard to get to neck PU height adjustment screws. Don't do it more than needed, and just take your time while removing and replacing it so you don't gouge or strip out the hole or screw.

In 40 years, I have never removed the neck from any of my guitars.

I've had no need to pull the necks off my guitars. Why are you doing it? Just bored?

Hello Bradleyjp25,

Back in the day when I was young
myself and friends many times took our
strats apart and used coins as shims
to get that "perfect"action.
I'm sure we overdid it, kids know it all.

Cheers.
