Hi all. I know this has been coverd many times, although I did a search and didn't find it. I just bought a 52 vintage RI Tele and was wondering why the neck pick up is so so weak?

Thanks

Robin

Check out youtube. Type in 52 tele RI in the search engine. That is where I discovered the neck pu? had something to with being used as a substitute for the electric bass. Which did not exist at the time. You can pop and slap the top string (maybe others too) and it sounds simular to an electric bass. I believe the middle setting is for the actual neck pick up. I just bought one of these guitars and in my VOX 50W amp I set all my eq setting right in the middle. My amp has a tube setting?booster knob on the back which I turn up all the way. I like it clean. It has more sustain and great tonal qualities than I could have expected. I hope this helps. Let me know if you would.
Good luck!

Robin,

On your 52 Fender did the wiring like they did in 52. The pick up selector works like this: bak is the bridge pickup, in the middle is the neck pickup, and forward is the neck pickup run through a filter that takes all the highs off. You should have recieved with your guitar a kit to update the wiring to the modern wiring set up. In that kit there is another capacitor. Let ma warn you that if you use that cap it WILL CHANGE the sound of your bridge pickup and give it more high end. that kills the wonderfull sound unique to the 52 RI. I had mine rewired so that it's bridge, both, neck without changing the cap out and just fixing it so it doesn't have the neck pick up filtered. and that kicks $@!. you could also have a Fender TwisteD Tele neck pickup put in , those sound much stronger than stock.

Good Luck
Hope This Helps
Blackie
(let me know how it works out )

One thing not talked about a lot is what you get from the middle switch position after you re-wire with the updated capacitor. It's a surprise, using both pickups you get a super clean, almost acoustic sound. Great for rhythm or light it up for George Harrison style brilliance.
