If your guitar was stolen, contact your local law enforcement agency and provide them with your serial number, so if it is recovered (unlikely), they can identify it as yours.

If you received a guitar you think may be stolen, contact your local law enforcement agency and report the serial number to them. Be prepared to lose the guitar.

THIS WAS A 1983 STANDARD TELECASTER THAT WAS STOLEN FROM ME
AROUND 1984, BOUGHT NEW BY ME, AND REGISTERED TO ME BY FENDER
BEEN LOOKING FOR IT EVER SINCE, ALSO REPORTED STOLEN TO POLICE
JUST THOUGHT WITH TODAYS TECHNOLOGY THERE MAY BE A WAY TO TRACK IT IF IT WAS WORKED ON OR TRIED TO REGISTER AGAIN

I guess you miss the guitar. It's been a long time and even with today's technology, I think the guitar is going to stay gone. I wish you luck on your quest!

Man, My bro's Deluxe P Bass was stolen like 12 years ago or so. The bummer of it is, I saw It at the local guitar shop like two weeks later. I turned the house upside down looking for the recipt. Never found it. It was bubble gum pink and had a couple of dings on it that were like finger prints. The shop told us no recipt no guitar. I beat myself up over it because one of my highschool "friends" stole it. I could have found him one just like it, but, it still wouldn't have been "his" bass. I'm sure most of you know what I'm talking about. Bummer. May be someday it'll turn up again.

... you could try calling Fender and see if they have any info on your serial number ... (there's no one here in these forums that would be able to help you)

Stewmac sells some sort of new microchip that you put in your guitar by drilling the strap button hole a little longer. If someone passes over it with a certain detector, it will display ownership info. So theres something new out there to help get your stuff back once stolen, but as far as finding something that was taken 20 or more years ago...I don't know if there's anything new that will help you track down a 20 year old guitar that may have the SN#s taken off or parted out by now...

I would agree with other posters -- unless someone tried to re-register it, the s/n isn't going to turn up anywhere. If a PD picked it up years ago, records and the guitar itself would be long gone by now. Policies probably vary, but I'd guess most PDs auction off stolen property that's never claimed after a certain (probably relatively short) period of time.

What I do (besides always keeping the receipts): I take several pictures of the guitar, including a shot that will include the s/n. I include a local newspaper, showing the date, in the frames and in at least two, I also show the receipt. Of course, if the guitar never showed up anywhere, none of this would do me any good except for the insurance claim.

I like the idea of the new chips they put in guitars -- positive ID should the guitar be found. But I read (yesterday, LA "Daily News") about how they're putting GPS devices in some of the objects in public Christmas displays. They're frequent targets for theft and in several recent cases, the police had the offenders in no time -- tracked through the GPS embedded in what they stole. It would be great if that came to guitars as the next step beyond the ID chips.

She (we never thought of ourselves)
Is leaving (never a thought for ourselves)
Home (we struggled hard all our lives to get by)
She's leaving home after living along (bye, bye)
For so many years

She's leaving home
Bye, bye
