Ernie Ball Regular Slinky's also....10, 13, 17, 26, 36, 46.

Really depends on your bridge set up on how loose/taught they can be. The sound again has many variables, guitar to speaker and everything in between.

The only thing I really judge them on is that they keep their life for a good few sessions/gigs with little or no deterioration.

I tried D'Addarios, didn't like 'em, so I went back to 250Rs. I kinda like the idea of keeping Fender on Fender.

Hey,
I like the fender 250s, but I tend to always go back to the more expensive Elixir 10s. I have sweaty hands and the Elixirs sound awesome when you put them on and continue to sound the 'same' for quite a while. I find that the other strings start out nice and brite, then go downhill pretty quickly once my acid hands have played them. Elixirs last about 3X as long as regular strings for me so the extra cost is a wash.

I usually use 250s but have used D'Addario 10s. Overall, I agree with others that the 250s will give you more of "that Fender sound" you got the Tele for. To my ear, the D'Addarios gave me a bit more muted tone.

From that country music spank to blues. I prefer the GSH Boomers 9-42, or whatever gauge, but thats just me.

I say try a few brands, there really are only a few companies who make there own strings anyway.

I know the conventional wisdom is that you should try to gravitate toward heavier strings. So a lot of people want to change the stock Telecaster strings (9-42s in most cases) with 10-46s or heavier.

How can we then explain James Burton? Burton strings his guitars as follows:

9-10-12-24-32-38

His high E, D, and A strings are the same as you will find in a set of stock 9-42s. But he uses a 10 instead of an 11 on the B string, a 12 instead of a 16 on the G, and a 38 instead of a 42 on the low E.

It surely has something to do with the wild string bending and pre-bending he does. On Elvis Presley's version of "Fools Rush In," Burton does a full step bend at the second fret on the G string (A to B).

I'm pretty strong but that is one tough bend on a 16 guage G string. It would be a lot easier with a 12.

Great post soggycrow. Very interesting. I just got my guitar back from my local guitar shop where they put on Ernie Ball 10's and fine-tuned everything. Feels good and sounds great.

I string my strats with 10's or 11's. I string my tele with 9's though, i found they help the twang come through more.

I just put a new set of Fender 250L's (9's) on my American Tele and I think they sound great. I must confess though, this is my first string change, so take it with a grain of salt. A friend of mine recommended DR Pure Blues. I might try them next. They are pure nickel (as opposed to the 250's, which are steel). Supposedly less twang with the Pure Blues. I like twang though!
