I like pretty much all the classic series teles, especially the 70's models. They look so vintage, I like the big pickguards

The 58 hot rod is awesome. Has a sticky fingerboard which I'm not sure of though.

I'm bumping this to include some of the newer models that have been released in the past three years or so.

Keeping in the spirit of "The best guitar is the one you own", I nominate the JV Series (Japanese Vintage) Squier by Fender Telecasters, ’52 vintage reissue.

Made in Japan from 1982-1984, these are the guitars that shook Fender USA to the core with their workmanship, sound and quality. (quite a story - google it) Don't let the Squier name fool you. These are some of the best guitars Fender ever made. Call me biased, but I can honestly say that in all the years I have owned one, I have yet to play a better Tele.

If you aren't familiar with these beauties, I can understand that you might be skeptical. Here's what some other owners have said:

http://reviews.harmony-central.com/reviews/Guitar/product/Fender/Squier+JV-Series+Telecaster/10/1

Keep your eyes pealed, every once in a while you will run across one that you can pick up for under $1,000. Just saw one go on e-bay Canada for $800. (Personally, I wouldn't sell mine for triple that.)

Watch for serial numbers that begin with JV (not SQ, MIJ or CIJ). Also made great JV Series Stratocasters.

I love the classic blues rock tones you can get from a Tele - Albert Collins, early Jimmy Page... and I love the way ash grain looks. But I also like modern necks and bigger frets.

So I'm with the American Standard and American Deluxe - ash body, maple fretboard...
